Bhoopesh, I would trust the XAFS.org spectrum more than mine, I'm sure that the APS has a better resolution etc. I'm aware that there are other forms of reduced iron carbide, but I did nothing special except for following the Li et al. paper. I then tried to see if the spectrum was similar to both the one on Dr. Newville's database as well as the Iglesia and coworkers' papers, and they were. I know this data is a bit glitchy... and I was pretty much only interested in the XANES. If the person that Dr. Newville is referring to made the Fe3C from the iron melt it would have been a white powder, so they likely did a similar procedure as reducing the Fe2O3 std. to a sufficient temperature (at 1 atm). I have also heard from a former Exxon researcher that when they wanted to make cementite they simply CO reduced Fe2O3 to a sufficient temperature as well. Hi Scott and Mathew, Thanks for pointing me to Matt Newville's archive. It is a great resource to have and I have used it on several occasions. However, what I found on that database is "Fe3C". Since there are couple of different local environments for Fe3C, and not all of them are Cementite - I am not sure if that would be a good standard for me. Nevertheless, it served as a good starting point. It would be great if Andrew can send us his data. Bhoopesh, There's a paper which says how to make it if you want to run it on your own: "Fe3C, which can form during FTS reactions, was prepared by temperature-programmed reaction (0.167 K/s) of Fe2O3 up to 973 K using CO (Matheson, 99.99%, 107 mol of CO/mol of Fe h) as the reduction and carburization agent. The resulting Fe3C powder was passivated in flowing 1% O2/ He (Matheson, 99.999%, 0.05 mol/h) at room temperature (RT) for 1 h before removing the sample from the synthesis cell." [1] S. Li, G.D. Meitzner and E. Iglesia, J. Phys. Chem. B, 105 (2001) 5743. I made some myself using this method. I would send my spectrum, but if I can recall we had glitches in the EXAFS region. Andrew Campos ** If you want other iron carbides, this will be quite tricky since this is the only one that can be synthesized to a pure extent... obviously one could make cementite to using an iron melt but that requires really high temperature furnaces etc.

mu(E) of theoretically calculated spectra

Hi all, I am doing the theoretical fitting using Artemis. But I am unable to get the mu(E) of theoretically calculated spectra in Artemis. If I got it correctly, Artemis plot the theoretical spectra using FEFF code. But it gives chi(k) and chi(R). Is there any way to get mu(E) from this chi(k) spectra. Or in order get the theoretically calculated mu(E) spectrum of the given structure , we have to use FEFF code alone. How it can be done? with thanks Abhijeet Gaur Vikram University Ujjain (INDIA)

The FEFF6L distributed with Ifeffit is only set up to calculate EXAFS. If you want the near edge structure, you will have to use FEFF8 separately. Ifeffit/iXAFS won't launch in OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Hello, I recently upgraded to OS 10.6 (snow leopard) on my intel Mac. It comes with version 2.3.4 of X11. Now, I can't seem to run any of the Horae GUI applications! I've tried launching Athena from iXAFS or from the stand alone IFEFFIT suite. When I run iXAFS, the normal launch window with Athena, Artemis, Hephaestus and the iXAFS shell appears. Clicking on the Athena, Artemis, and icons Hephaestus causes X11 to launch with an xterm window, but Aquaterm does not load. However, the iXAFS shell seems to load, though I'm not experienced enough with the shell to know if it's fine or not. Upon launching the Athena standalone program from IFEFFIT (downloaded here: http://cars9.uchicago.edu/~ifeffit/src/Ifeffit-1.2.10-Mac10.4_Intel_horae06…) clicking on "X11 graphics" launches xterm but not Aquaterm, and clicking on "Aquaterm" closes the program. Not sure if this is a Snow Leopard related problem or not- there has been a new version of X11 released (2.4) that is unsupported in OS 10.6, and unfortunately it doesn't seem to allow me to install a previous 2.3.2 version. Looks like I'll have to downgrade back to Leopard, these cat names are getting confusing. Has anyone experienced anything similar, or have any insight on how to fix the problem? Hi, I have only two short questions. Is it possible that values for chi-square and reduced chi-square given in the "Fit results" and the "Combinatorics" page are inverted within Athena? In the CSV report for all fits, which of these both columns ("chisqr", "chinu" ) is chi-square and which is reduced chi-square? thanks, Jens

Andreas, Thanks for your input. We did you use a Zn foil reference and I had aligned the scans in Athena using the auto align feature (to the smoothed derivative). But do to your and Carlo Segre's suggestions I re-checked the alignment, this time zooming very closely. I noticed that a few of the reference scans were +/-0.1 eV misaligned from the reference standard. After the re-alignment the IND value now reaches a minimum at 2 components. Thanks so much for the suggestion! You really can't be too careful with the alignment. Determining the correct number of components from PCA

Hi all, I have a question about the "best" method to use to decide the correct number of components in a system based on a PCA. Myself and a collaborator took in-situ XANES scans of the formation of ZnO in aqueous solution. We have a series of scans from this experiment and I have done a PCA on them using SIXPack. After doing the PCA I unchecked the components until I could no longer visually reconstruct the series of scans accurately (by visual determination). Using this visual method I only need 2 components. But if I go by the minimum of the IND function (what the SIXPack user guide recommends) I should use three components. I have posted the sample/reconstruction plots for 2 and 3 component reconstructions here (the scan I chose to reconstruct is representative of the data series): http://dunx1.irt.drexel.edu/~kmm333/xafs/pca_recon_12.5_90_scan10_2comp.html http://dunx1.irt.drexel.edu/~kmm333/xafs/pca_recon_12.5_90_scan10_3comp.html The main difference between the two plots is that the 3 component reconstruction fits the edge region better. Athena error reading file

Hi everyone, I have two scans taken at x19a of the NSLS (attached) recently that won't open in Athena. Scans before and after these two had no problem, but these give the error reading file message. This was true using whatever version of Athena is on their beamline computer and also version 0.8.056. Vanadium pre edge peak contributes to K-space?

Hello all, After calibration, alignment and merging V K edge data, there seems to be a large peak in R space below 1 A. From most examples and readings, this would seem to be noise since atoms do not reside that close to each other. Adding a background addresses this noise but then the number of variables becomes too large and meaningless to the first shell R space range. I believe the problem lies with the large pre edge feature seen with high valence state Vanadium compounds. Any suggestions on how to work through this and make realistic EXAFS analysis on these compounds. Thanks everyone, -- Christopher J. Hi All I am having problems in comparing the real bond length as obtained from EXAFS data and Reitveld analysis of XRD data of te same sample. The bond lengths as observed from the XAFS data seems to be much smaller that that from XRD. Is there some multiplication factor known in literature to address this issue? S Sen
