These insights extend beyond our solar system, where the tally of recently discovered extrasolar planets has exceeded 5,000, indicating a wide array of interior compositions. Since the chemical and physical properties of possible planetary materials play important roles in controlling the structure, dynamics, chemistry, phase relation and evolution, etc. of the interior of the Earth and other planets, being able to acquire high quality data under high-pressure and high-temperature using state-of-the-art experimental methods and tools becomes a very critical part of the research process. Over the last several decades, technological advancements have enabled the study of materials under extreme conditions, including static and dynamic high pressure, high and low temperatures, high magnetic field, irradiation, as well as large strains and quantum confined systems. As phenomena under extreme conditions can be very different from those observed at ambient conditions, these developments are ushering in new technologies that will aid in planetary science and discovery of novel materials. Not only will the precious data help us to better understand certain phenomena or processes (geodynamics, geochemistry, etc.) inside the Earth and other planets but will also provide theoretical computation research with valuable information to develop better models of our planet. We welcome all experimental or theoretical computation studies that would stimulate interests and discussions related to high-pressure Earth science and planetary sciences to contribute to this session. Topics encouraged, but not limited to, include high-pressure studies under static or dynamic compression, spectroscopy, X-ray, neutron, large volume press to diamond anvil cell experiments, solid state samples to glasses or liquids, and theoretical computation work as well. SESSION #1: Session ID# 185526: "Advanced Experimental, Computational and Analytical Approaches in Exploring Deep Planetary Interiors (MR002)" Great scientific discoveries have traditionally followed in the aftermath of experimental and theoretical breakthroughs. Recent advanced developments in experimental techniques allow in situ diagnostics of mineral properties and structure modeling at extreme pressure, temperature and stress conditions in various time-domain modes that grant access to the most complex parts of the Earth and planetary interiors. 2023 APS SMS/CONUSS Workshop May 10-12, 2023 Synchrotron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (SMS) techniques are implemented by a broad scientific community to probe magnetism, valence states, electronic states of a wide range of materials. The brilliance of synchrotron radiation allows probing very small samples, enabling spatially resolved measurements and measurements at extreme conditions of pressures and temperatures. A new SMS technique suitable for 57Fe SMS in the APS-U era in any fill pattern is under development at sector 3. The Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, is organizing an in- person three-day workshop on SMS and CONUSS. The workshop will introduce the new SMS technique to the User community and related beamline capabilities. Extensive hands-on training on spectra interpretation using the software CONUSS (https://www.nrixs.com/conuss.html<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nrixs.com/conuss.html__;!!BpyFHLRN4T…>) will be conducted by invited speaker Wolfgang Sturhahn. The workshop is a great opportunity for students and early career scientists to become familiar with CONUSS and discuss specific aspects of SMS data interpretation. The three-day workshop will be conducted at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory. Please note that Argonne National Laboratory requires a security check for visitors, which may take up to two months, particularly for citizens of countries that are considered sensitive countries under DOE regulations. There is no registration fee to participate to this workshop. Financial support for accommodation will be available for attendees. The workshop will be limited to 20 participants. Samples in high pressure devices often appear in the form of a multiphase and multicrystal assemblage within a micro-focused x-ray beam. Such samples fall in between the ideal single-crystal and powder and are inappropriate for conventional crystallographic characterization. In addition, sample microstructures need to be characterized and this requires mapping the orientations and properties of hundreds of individual grains simultaneously. Recently, new multigrain crystallography and multi-crystal indexing techniques emerged. Both have now been successfully applied to characterize the crystal structures of complex multigrain, multi-phase samples at extreme conditions, as well as to track the hundreds of microstructural elements of materials undergoing processes such as phase transformation and plastic deformation. Despite significant advances, however, these experiments and the processing of such data remain a technical challenge. Nevertheless, these methods offer great avenues for discoveries in high pressure research. With new updated synchrotron sources, studies of materials under multi-megabar pressures will expand and these materials will require investigating multiple crystals simultaneously. In parallel, multigrain crystallography allows, for instance, for a new approach in the study of phase transformations, the induced microstructures, and the associated mechanisms. Finally, the high-pressure community has developed a great expertise at solving crystal structures under complex environments, and this could cross-feed into the multigrain crystallography community and other fields of science. This microsymposium aims at bringing together those addressing multicrystal indexings, characterization of new structures and microstructural studies using multigrain crystallography under pressure.
