Dear colleagues, We are announcing a workshop on: Advances in synchrotron-based research towards understanding the structure, evolution, and dynamics of Earth and planetary interiors Save the dates : August 31 - September 2, 2021. As recently announced, the NSF-EAR is soliciting proposals to develop, manage, operate, and support user access to U.S. synchrotron-based and supporting laboratory capabilities necessary to advance Earth sciences research and training (https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2021/nsf21592/nsf21592.pdf) The new single lead organization will manage currently supported synchrotron facilities (operated by GSECARS and COMPRES) and develop new capabilities to address priority science questions and related infrastructure recommendations such as those identified in the report: Earth in Time (https://doi.org/10.17226/25761) In the light of this solicitation, we are organizing a workshop (hybrid or virtual mode) to address future opportunities to advance geomaterials research at high pressures, temperatures, and strain rates. We encourage everyone who plans to utilize synchrotron-based and supporting sample analytical capabilities in their research to participate in the workshop. Graduate student and post-doctoral scholar participation is particularly encouraged. Topics to be addressed: (1) Current state-of-the-art synchrotron capabilities for studies of Earth and planetary materials at elevated conditions, from crust to the core and beyond. (2) Novel technological developments and capabilities that will boost Earth and planetary sciences research, especially in view of recent and planned upgrades to US synchrotron facilities. (3) New approaches to foster engagement and expansion of the user community, including to traditionally underrepresented constituencies. (4) User community needs for cyberinfrastructure and data services. Studying the physical and chemical properties of rock-forming minerals at extreme pressure, stress and temperature conditions provides invaluable information for modeling the planetary interiors, as well as an insight on geological processes that still remain ongoing conundrums. Recent developments in static and dynamic state-of-the-art experimental methods elucidate fundamental properties (e.g. structure, melting, kinetics, elasticity, phase relations and others) of geo-materials and extend this research to previously inaccessible scales. Pioneer computational-theory in combination with high quality data and advanced analysis methods allow for the full assessment of countless plausible scenarios that describe micro- and macroscopic processes in various time-domains. This session welcomes contributions that highlight innovative experimental and analytical techniques that address a wide range of physical and chemical mineral properties, and enhance our understanding of the formation, structure and dynamics of the Earth's interior and other planetary bodies. Synchrotrons and Geochemistry: A Workshop for Novices and Experts, June 28 – 29, 2021 We invite you to attend a 2-day virtual workshop that focuses on applications of synchrotron science to geochemical research. This workshop targets both those who are less familiar with synchrotron sources – paging all graduate students! – and experienced users who are eager to learn about and to discuss the next generation of synchrotron capabilities for geochemical research. The symposium is being organized by the Steering Committee for Synchrotron Earth Science in response to NSF’s announcement that it is seeking the creation of a new organization to oversee the development of analytical instruments for geoscience research at synchrotron light sources. Participation in this workshop is free, but all participants must register. Geoscience Synchrotron Users Steering Committee

To the Geoscience Synchrotron User Community: As you may be aware, late last year NSF issued a Dear Colleague Letter to announce plans for a competition for the management and operation of synchrotron-hosted analytical capabilities for Earth Science research. While a call for proposals has not yet been released by NSF, we have taken the step of establishing a steering committee to assist the Geoscience synchrotron user community in responding to the new initiative from NSF. A request for suggestions for committee members was sent to the community in December 2020. Based on the response, a committee has been established which includes representation from existing organizations (COMPRES, GSECARS) as well at-large members from the user community. The committee was selected to include representatives from many of the Geoscience disciplines that access synchrotron facilities. Tom Duffy (Princeton) is serving as Chair of the Steering Committee. Virtual workshop announcement “Compact Synchrotron Sources and New X-ray Science Opportunities” March 4-5, 2021

Aloha GSECARS Users, You are cordially invited to participate in a virtual workshop “Compact Synchrotron Sources and New X-ray Science Opportunities”, which will take place on March 4-5, 2021 via Zoom. Conventional synchrotrons are large-scale (typically hundreds of meter radius storage ring) facilities and cost close to a billion dollars to build and tens to hundreds of million yearly to operate. Synchrotron X-ray radiation is very intense and has unique properties that make it attractive for cutting-edge research in disciplines ranging from materials science to medicine. Over the last several decades, synchrotron experiment played a pivotal role in furthering mineralogy, petrology and mineral physics. They allow real-time in situ observations of chemical reactions and physical processes, determination of crystal structures of complex solids, liquids, and protein biomolecules, and imaging of 3-dimensional objects with resolution better than 1 micrometer. Between 1990 and 2020 as many as 10 Nobel prizes have been awarded in chemistry and physics for synchrotron-related research. Over the last decade, lab-based compact synchrotron devices have been developed, and some are now available as commercial turn-key instruments, offering many of the advantages of the large-scale facilities, though their usage thus far has been limited mainly to industrial labs and few universities outside the USA. This workshop is related to an ongoing effort to develop the Hawaiian Center for Compact Advanced Synchrotron Technology Innovation and Development (HI-COAST-TIDE) and aims to review existing compact-synchrotron source technology solutions and experience from ongoing projects of this type. It will also showcase diverse examples of user science that can be conducted at compact synchrotron facilities, and offer an introduction to experimental techniques such as In Situ X-ray Diffraction, X-ray Fluorescence and Absorption Spectroscopy, Computed X-ray Tomography and Phase Contrast Imaging, as well as Small Angle X-ray Scattering. The workshop will feature about 15 30-min-long presentations from leading X-ray science experts around the world and will target applications in chemistry, physics, materials science, geology, planetary science, biology, biophysics and medical research. If you already are a synchrotron user, we hope to show you if any of your research could be carried out efficiently at compact synchrotrons. If you have not used synchrotron X-ray techniques before, the workshop presentations should help you decide if becoming a home-synchrotron user could enhance your research and help addressing key science questions you are studying. Virtual Tutorial at GSECARS - Crystal Truncation Rod Diffraction

GeoSoilEnviroCARS, the University of Chicago, at the Advanced Photon Source invites you to attend a half-day workshop entitled: Virtual Tutorial on Crystal Truncation Rod Diffraction for Atomic-Scale Surface Structure Measurement Metal oxide surfaces mediate reactions that control the chemistry of natural waters, battery technologies, catalysis, nuclear fuels, and numerous other natural and engineered systems. Molecular-level measurements of interfacial structures are essential to developing accurate models of natural phenomena and optimizing technologies. However, many available techniques rely on ultra-high vacuum environments, precluding measurements under realistic conditions. In contrast, crystal truncation rod (CTR) diffraction can be conducted in complex environments including gases, liquids, and hazardous material containments. The technique reveals atomic-scale interfacial structures, relaxations, and adsorbate positions on single-crystal surfaces and at buried interfaces. During this virtual “hands-on” workshop we will demonstrate all aspects to CTR data collection and analysis. Participants will have the opportunity to “walk” into the experimental station with us and observe firsthand how we mount, align, and measure the surface of a metal-oxide crystal. As the data rolls in we will perform real-time data reduction followed by quantitative fitting of the collected CTR data leading to a model that reveals the interface’s atomic relaxations and structural perturbations driven by interfacial chemistry.
