Dear GSECARS Users, I am writing to remind you that the 2023-1 proposal deadline is this Friday, October 28. This is the last run before the APS shuts down for a year, beginning on April 17, 2023. For this run we will attempt to accommodate proposals with compelling reasons to run before the shutdown. These might include, for example, final experiments to collect data for a PhD thesis, or collecting preliminary data for a new funding proposal. Please e-mail Nancy Lazarz and the beamline scientist responsible for the technique you want to use to let us know of such special circumstances. Thanks, Mark Rivers

Will you attend? - 2022 IUCr High-Pressure Workshop in Chicago

Dear colleagues, As we are placing the final touches on the agenda of our IUCr 2022 High-Pressure workshop "Advanced High-Pressure Crystallography"<https://gsecars.uchicago.edu/education-and-outreach/2022-iucr-high-pressure…>, which will take place on 6-10 December at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory (USA), we would like to know whether you are planning to attend this meeting. We invite you to fill out this RSVP poll by 5th of August.<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=kiywgyZf7UieW2wvykao5sy…> The meeting will have a hybrid character, although in-person participation is strongly suggested, particularly for those of you who are interested in attending the Hands-on Tutorial on "Single-crystal X-ray Diffraction Data Processing Techniques at Extreme Conditions: from simple single-crystals to complex multigrain samples". The workshop will charge a registration fee for all participants. Estimated cost for in-person and hybrid attendance will be around $150 and $50, respectively. Limited financial support will be available for students, postdocs and young scientists to help with the registration fee and lodging. The request form for financial support will be available soon on the workshop website. All submitted abstracts will be considered for poster presentations and a few will be selected for an oral presentation. Studying the physical and chemical properties of planet-forming minerals at extreme pressure and temperature conditions provides invaluable information for modeling the planetary interiors' structure and evolution, as well as an insight on geological processes that remain conundrums. Developments in the state-of-the-art static and dynamic experimental methods elucidate fundamental properties (e.g. structure, thermodynamics, kinetics, elasticity, phase relations, etc.) of geo-materials and extend this research to previously inaccessible regions. 2022 IUCr High pressure workshop in Chicago

Dear Colleagues, Save the date: December 6-10, 2022, Chicago We are organizing the 2022 IUCr High Pressure Workshop “Advanced High-Pressure Crystallography” at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory (USA). Currently we are planning preferably for an in-person attendance (pandemic permits) with advanced remote connection option (hybrid mode), details will be available soon at the workshop’s website: https://gsecars.uchicago.edu/education-and-outreach/2022-iucr-high-pressure… The purpose of the 2022 workshop of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) Commission on High Pressure is to bring together researchers who apply extreme-conditions crystallography in combination with other experimental and computational methods to study a wide range of material properties covering various fields of science, including condensed-matter physics, solid-state chemistry, geophysics, materials science, nanotechnology etc. The workshop aims to facilitate extensive discussion and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students, postdocs and early carrier scientists in particular will find this workshop helpful in gaining improved familiarity with available state-of-the-art methods and how they can be applied to their research. We plan to organize a tour to the relevant APS beamlines for workshop attendees and a half-day tutorial with hands on examples.
