GSECARS Users, GSE beamline scientist Matt Newville has entered the Argonne National Laboratory 2017 Art of Science contest. He submitted an X-ray micro-fluorescence image of leaf tissue of wild-type Arabidopsis thaliana, a model plant used in many genetic studies. The top 13 entries will be featured in Argonne National Laboratory's 2018 calendar. We encourage the GSE user community to vote for Matt's image (#1 ) in the image list. Thanks! New capabilities for high-pressure diamond anvil cell research - GSECARS 13-BM-C

In June 2014 in collaboration with GSECARS and the University of Hawaii, COMPRES funded the Partnership for eXtreme Xtallography (PX^2). PX^2 offers new capabilities for high-pressure diamond anvil cell research at GSECARS experimental station 13-BM-C at the APS. The beamline offers a focused, monochromatic 30 keV incident beam, focused to approximately 15x15 micrometers, and a unique 6-circle heavy duty Newport diffractometer, optimized for variety of advanced crystallography experiments, including powder and single crystal diffraction. While the more advanced elements of the PX^2 setup are still under development, the basic functionality supporting diamond anvil cell experiments at ambient temperature and with resistive heating is already available. GSECARS will be accepting General User Proposals for the 2015-2 run for the new PX^2 instrument from "friendly users" with understanding that the new setup is still under development. The deadline for submission of GUP proposals is tomorrow (11:59pm CST, March 6, 2015). Since the deadline is so near, rapid access proposals submitted after March 6 for the 2015-2 run will be considered.
