Steering Committee for the "Management and Operations of synchrotron-hosted analytical capabilities for Earth sciences research" On November 19, 2020 we sent a message soliciting nominations for members of a Steering Committee for the "Management and Operations of synchrotron-hosted analytical capabilities for Earth sciences research". We thank the community for submitting more than 40 nominations. The COMPRES Executive Committee and GSECARS senior staff ranked nominations for at-large community members of the steering committee with consideration to demographics (gender, career stage), areas of expertise (technique and science), and synchrotrons and other types of institutions represented. The COMPRES Executive Committee and GSECARS senior staff voted for 4 additional members from each of their current leadership. We are very pleased to announce that the following people have agreed to serve as members of the committee. It originally said that the solicitation was expected to be released in the fourth quarter of 2020, and the new proposal to be due in the second quarter of 2021. The revised version changes these dates by one quarter, so the solicitation is expected in the first quarter of 2021, and the proposal due in the third quarter of 2021. Last call for registration for rock deformation workshop

In-Situ Rock Deformation Research Coordination Network (https://www.isrdrcn.org/) announces a science workshop for the week of Jan 18 - 22, 2021. The main goals of this workshop are: 1) Integration of beamline technologies and experimental rock deformation; 2) Identify outstanding questions and future research directions. We anticipate several white papers on new research visions based on community input after the workshop. Presentations will be given in virtual meeting format on the afternoons of Jan 18 and 19, 2021. Talk materials will be available for online viewing between Jan 20 and onward. A virtual discussion meeting will be held on Jan 22, 2021, to discuss potential new science of rock deformation with synchrotron techniques, feasibility, and implementation. Call for Member Nominations of Steering Committee “Management and Operations of synchrotron-hosted analytical capabilities for Earth sciences research” We are creating a Steering Committee that is an implementation committee whose charge is to oversee the creation of a new organization in response to the NSF Dear Colleague Letter “Competition of Management and Operations of synchrotron-hosted analytical capabilities for Earth sciences research”. We envisage a committee membership covering the broad earth science community, including representatives of COMPRES and GSECARS. The number of members would be in the range 10-15. The Steering Committee would be dissolved upon submission of the solicited NSF proposal. Some Charges to the Steering Committee may include: 1. Developing a vision statement for the new organization. 2. Selecting a name for the new organization. 3. Developing the organizational chart that describes the management structure of the new organization. 4. Selecting a Search Committee that would recommend the Principal Investigator and other leadership positions for the new organization. 5. Selecting a Proposal Writing Group. 6. Selecting a Governance and Membership committee that will propose the structure and management of the new organization if the proposal is successful. 7. Receiving input from the broader earth sciences community. Virtual hands-on tutorial on synchrotron computed microtomography

Dear GSECARS Users, On October 29 and 30, Dr. Mark Rivers at GSECARS will host virtual hands-on tutorial sessions on synchrotron computed microtomography. Two identical tutorial sessions will be offered. We will use Zoom, and each session will last 4 hours (1-5pm CDT).
