Levitas Departments of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Iowa State University Date: Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 12 p.m. ET / 9 a.m. PT Preregister and Receive Zoom<https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://info.aps.org/e/640833/sBTKqoEXqF--1JVQ--… > Abstract Plastic strain-induced phase transformations (PTs) during compression in diamond anvil cell (DAC) and torsion in rotational DAC (RDAC) require entirely different thermodynamic and kinetic treatments and experimental characterization [1,2] than pressure-induced PTs. The four-scale theory for plastic strain-induced PTs is developed [1], including molecular dynamics and first-principle simulations, developed nanoscale and scale-free phase-field approaches, and the behavior of the sample in DAC/RDAC at the macroscale. Various experimental effects are reproduced and predicted. It became clear [2-4] that their description strongly depends on the microstructure and its evolution, and microstructure evolves during strain-induced PTs. Four topics will be covered. 1. It was found [3,4] for severely predeformed Zr that (a) crystallite size and dislocation density in both phases in a single-phase state, the minimum pressure for the strain-induced α-ω PT in Zr, and the pressure-dependent yield strength of ω-Zr are getting steady and independent of plastic strain tensor and strain path ; (b) crystallite size and dislocation density in ω-Zr and (with some outliners) α-Zr during PT are independent of pressure, plastic strain tensor, and its path, and depend on the volume fraction of the high-pressure phase only. Obtained results can be used to find economic ways of grain refinement during PT and obtain nanocomposite with optimal properties. 2. Coupled experimental-analytical-computational approaches, utilizing synchrotron X-ray diffraction, are developed [5,6] to solve an inverse problem and find fields of all components of stress and plastic strain tensors and friction rules before, during, and after α-ω PT in strongly plastically predeformed Zr. In addition, the kinetics of strain-induced PT is described in the whole sample. 3. We revealed in situ various unexpected plastic strain-induced PT phenomena in Si [7]. Thus, for 100 nm Si, strain-induced PT Si-I→Si-II initiates at 0.3 GPa versus 16.2 GPa under hydrostatic conditions; for 30 nm Si, it is 6.1 GPa versus ∞ since it does not occur. For 100 nm Si-I→Si-III, it is 0.6 GPa vs. ∞. The predicted theoretical correlation between the direct and inverse Hall-Petch effect of the grain size on the yield strength and the minimum pressure for strain-induced PT is confirmed. Retaining Si-II at ambient pressure and obtaining reverse Si-II→Si-I PT are achieved for the first time. Retaining single-phase Si III is achieved at much more economic conditions than the currently known. 4. A new theory is developed for the plastic strain-induced olivine-spinel PT in a shear band, which resolves multiple existing puzzles in the mechanism of deep-focus earthquakes [8]. Conceptual experimental confirmation is obtained [9]. The obtained results offer a new fundamental understanding of strain-induced PTs under high pressure in DAC/RDAC. They create new opportunities in material design, synthesis, and processing of nanostructured materials by severe plastic deformations at low pressure, methods of controlling PTs and nanostructures, and searching for new high-pressure phases and phenomena. 1. Biography Professor Valery Levitas, Iowa State University Valery I. Levitas is an Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in Engineering and Murray Harpole Chair in Engineering at Iowa State University, Departments of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Ames, IA, USA. He received his PhD and then worked as a group leader and Leading Researcher at the Institute for Superhard Materials of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Kyiv. Later, he worked at the University of Hannover, Germany, Texas Tech University, and Iowa State University. He brought a unique device, the rotational diamond anvil cell (RDAC) to the USA from his former group in Kyiv. Valery initiated (a) in situ experimental studies of coupled severe plastic deformations, plastic strain-induced phase transformations, and microstructure evolution under high pressure with RDAC, (b) corresponding four-scale theory (from atomistic to macroscale), and (c) coupled experimental-computational methods to extract information about all heterogeneous fields in the sample, mechanical and transformational properties, as well as governing rules and new phenomena. He published 485 scientific papers, including 302 refereed journal papers, 3 monographs, 11 book chapters, as well as 11 patents; he has >14,000 citations and an h-factor of 70. Valery presented numerous plenary, keynote, and invited lectures for high pressure, nanomaterials by severe plastic deformations, mechanochemistry, phase transformations, material science, and mechanics of materials communities. Beamtime for SEES beamlines at the APS

Dear SEES Users, The Advanced Photon Source (APS) has opened the General User Proposal (GUP) call for the 2025-2 run cycle with a deadline of March 5. APS has also opened a Rapid Access Proposal (RAP) call for 2025-1. All SEES beamlines at the APS (3-ID, 6-BM, and all Sector 13 beamlines) will participate in both the 2025-2 GUP and 2025-1 RAP calls. The NSF SEES beamlines and techniques will come online for user experiments at different times as they become ready over the coming months. We're excited to welcome users back to conduct early experiments in 2025-1 and 2025-2. These represent critical steps in commissioning the capabilities of the new facility and beamlines. This time period will likely entail a higher probability of lost user beamtime due to issues encountered with the storage ring or the beamline components when compared with mature general user operations. The details are as follows: *Title of workshop:* Soft and tender X-ray imaging and spectroscopic analysis of Earth and environmental samples | 1-DAY WORKSHOP *Registration Deadline: May 21, 2025* *Description of workshop:* Synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopic and microscopic techniques offer capabilities to investigate micro- and nano-scale geochemical processes in Earth surface systems. Up to now, the low temperature geochemical community has largely accessed hard X-ray instruments to study the reactivity and transport of geogenic and anthropogenic contaminants such as arsenic, uranium, and mercury. Understanding how these contaminants link to light elements (e.g., carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur) and other key environmental reactions (e.g., biogeochemical nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, and (bio)mineralization) requires the use of soft and tender X-ray techniques. In this workshop, we will introduce an exciting new suite of programs that participants can increase their access to soft and tender X-ray techniques for geochemical research. The “Synergy of Soft and Tender X-rays for Earth Research” (SYSTER) program at the Advanced Light Source (ALS; Berkeley, CA, USA) and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL; Menlo Park, CA, USA), subcomponents of the US National Science Foundation-awarded “Synchrotron Earth and Environmental Science” (SEES) program, aims to provide Earth and Environmental Science (EES) synchrotron users with access to soft and tender X-ray beamline, while also developing new end-stations to promote EES research. This workshop is for new and current synchrotron users interested in increasing their skill sets. In this one-day workshop, we will focus on X-ray micro- and nano-probe beamlines with SEES support at ALS and SSRL: (1) ALS 5.3.2.2 (soft X-ray optimized STXM), (2) ALS COSMIC 7.0.1.2 (soft to tender X-rays with high spatial resolution by ptychography), (3) ALS 11.0.2.2 (soft to tender X-ray STXM with capability of characterizing magnetic properties), and (4) SSRL Beamline 14-3b (tender X-ray microprobe). The soft X-ray beamlines offer a energy range of 0.2 – 0.8 keV which enables the study of elemental composition and speciation of relatively light elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and potassium which are essential elements for life. The tender X-ray beamlines provide an energy range of up to 5 keV, enabling the analysis of a wide range of major elements, trace metal nutrients and heavy metal contaminants. We will discuss the feasible elements to detect and the applications of image analysis and ptychography for Earth and environmental samples. We will also deliver a practical work-flow for beamline experiments, including proposal preparation, sample preparation (e.g., controlling thickness and concentration), general operation, and data analysis strategies. We will highlight examples of imaging and spectroscopic analysis of natural samples using multiple detection modes (multimodal analysis) and multiple instruments (correlative analysis). For example, we will share how to characterize metal-organic species from soils and marine environments using ALS nanoprobes. We will also include a tutorial on how to prepare multimodal samples and process the data to enhance compatibility between different beamlines. Combining different radiation sources and techniques at different beamlines is crucial for investigating geochemical processes involving interactions between organic compounds and transition metals, such as organo-mineral interaction, and biomineralization. This workshop will provide key information for new users on the use of X-ray microscopic and spectroscopic instruments, and suggest various pathways for sample characterization to experienced users in the field of environmental geochemistry. In this session we will explore the application of micro- and nanoscale imaging and spectroscopic techniques such as confocal Raman microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and synchrotron-based methods to study complex biogeochemical processes, microbial interactions and mineral weathering. Theme: Theme 09: Biogeochemical Cycles in Earth Systems Session Title: *09f Imaging and spectroscopic techniques for biogeochemistry, environmental and planetary sciences: from conventional to synchrotron-based microscopy techniques* Session Description: Micro and nanoscale imaging and spectroscopic analysis are critical for studying complex biogeochemical processes in fields of aquatic, terrestrial, and planetary sciences. Spatiotemporally sensitive measurements of microbial community dynamics, organo/microbe -mineral interfaces, and nanoscale mineral weathering processes in heterogeneous systems enable the decoupling of distinct biogeochemical reactions, allowing the investigation of relevant mechanisms. This session aims to advance our knowledge of using innovative imaging and spectroscopic techniques including confocal Raman microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, light-sheet fluorescence microscopy and synchrotron-based techniques (e.g., Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM), X-ray Fluorescence Microprobe (XFM), ptychography, X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES)) to investigate biogeochemical reactions. We welcome contributions that: (1) utilize one or multiple imaging and spectroscopic techniques to study biogeochemical reactions; (2) employ novel experimental tools (e.g., microfluidics, correlative microscopy, in situ 3D imaging under cryo- or hydrated conditions, and bioreporters) to investigate microbial interactions; and (3) apply conventional and customized data analysis tools to interpret imaging results from across various analytical techniques.
