SEES Town Hall on FAIR Data Sharing Policies and Updates on APS and ALS upgrades Wednesday, Nov 6th at 3 PM Chicago time Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for a SEES Town Hall on FAIR Data Sharing Policies and Updates on APS and ALS upgrades. This Town Hall will be a 1-hour Zoom meeting where SEES will present the results of a survey conducted by the SEES User Group on FAIR data sharing, and seek your input on the policies SEES should adopt for FAIR data sharing of beamline data. We will also give brief status reports on the APS upgrade and what is happening at the SEES beamlines at the APS. Dear colleagues, we are delighted to announce that we will organize the XIX^th EMPG meeting in Orleans, France, on June 16-19^th , 2025. EMPG means Experimental Mineralogy Petrology and Geochemistry, that is to say the congress for those who use experiments to understand the functioning of Earth's and planetary systems. Please save the date and plan your travel as there will be, around mid-June to early-July 2025, three important meetings in a row in Europe: EMPG-2025 in Orléans, IAVCEI-2025 in Geneva, and the Goldschmidt-2025 in Prague. Beamtime for SEES beamlines at the APS

Dear SEES Users, The Advanced Photon Source (APS) has opened the General User Proposal (GUP) call for the 2025-1 run cycle with a deadline of October 25. APS has also opened a Rapid Access Proposal (RAP) call for 2024-3. All SEES beamlines at the APS (3-ID, 6-BM, and all Sector 13 beamlines) will participate in both the 2025-1 GUP and 2024-3 RAP calls. The NSF SEES beamlines and techniques will come online for user experiments at different times as they become ready over the coming months. The APS-U storage ring itself is still undergoing commissioning activities. We're excited to welcome users back to conduct early experiments in 2024-3 and 2025-1. These represent critical steps in commissioning the capabilities of the new facility and beamlines. This time period will likely entail a higher probability of lost user beamtime due to issues encountered with the storage ring or the beamline components when compared with mature general user operations. Users for whom we are able to allocate beamtime for the 2024-3 run (either through the prior GUP or the current RAP call) will be contacted about scheduling if and when the beamline/technique is ready. Beamtime for the 2025-1 run will be scheduled similarly for beamlines that are still commissioning at that time and via the APS scheduling system for beamlines that have transitioned to general user operations by then. Polymorphism of Superionic Ice: Static vs Dynamic Compression Dr. Vitali Pakapenka Center for Advanced Radiations Sources The University of Chicago Date: Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 2 p.m. ET Abstract: Water is abundant in natural environments, but its structure and physical properties at ultra extreme conditions remain uncertain. A family of superionic ices with highly mobile protons within the stable oxygen sublattice has been predicted at high pressures in a pressure-temperature phase space that borders the familiar high-pressure solid ices and the fluid. However, the existence of superionic ices, their phase boundaries, and the location of the melting line have been challenging to assess due to the extreme difficulties and uncertainties in both theory and experiments, which yielded contradictory results depending on the techniques applied and data interpretation. Here I will present results of recent measurements on superionic phase boundaries determined at different experimental conditions with extensive comparison to available static and dynamic data including theoretical simulations. Unique properties of superionic phases will be discussed in the light of understanding the pathway of phase transitions in the time-domain experiments. Biography: Dr. Pakapenka’s research interests are in the field of the solid-state physics, which is dedicated to understand how extreme conditions (both static and dynamic) affect the physical and chemical properties of materials: structure, phase transition, melting, partitioning, chemical reaction, diffusion, elasticity etc. that can be used for realistic modeling of the composition and dynamics of the terrestrial and giant planet interiors, development of theoretical models. His current primary focus is pushing the limits of ultra-high pressure and temperature experiments to 1 TPa and 10,000 K, which will permit in situ experiments addressing the phase diagrams of compounds relevant to giant planet interiors, light element partitioning between molten iron alloys and silicates, and the synthesis of novel high-pressure materials. Dr. Prakapenka received his Ph.D. in Solid State Physics from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institut. He was a researcher at the Advanced Materials research Laboratory at the Gomel State University in Belarus.
