Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to invite you to submit an abstract to our session (*09f*) at Goldschmidt 2025. In this session we will explore the application of micro- and nanoscale imaging and spectroscopic techniques such as confocal Raman microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and synchrotron-based methods to study complex biogeochemical processes, microbial interactions and mineral weathering. The submission deadline is 26 February 2025. Detailed information is provided below. Theme: Theme 09: Biogeochemical Cycles in Earth Systems Session Title: *09f Imaging and spectroscopic techniques for biogeochemistry, environmental and planetary sciences: from conventional to synchrotron-based microscopy techniques* Session Description: Micro and nanoscale imaging and spectroscopic analysis are critical for studying complex biogeochemical processes in fields of aquatic, terrestrial, and planetary sciences. Spatiotemporally sensitive measurements of microbial community dynamics, organo/microbe -mineral interfaces, and nanoscale mineral weathering processes in heterogeneous systems enable the decoupling of distinct biogeochemical reactions, allowing the investigation of relevant mechanisms. This session aims to advance our knowledge of using innovative imaging and spectroscopic techniques including confocal Raman microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, light-sheet fluorescence microscopy and synchrotron-based techniques (e.g., Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM), X-ray Fluorescence Microprobe (XFM), ptychography, X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES)) to investigate biogeochemical reactions. We welcome contributions that: (1) utilize one or multiple imaging and spectroscopic techniques to study biogeochemical reactions; (2) employ novel experimental tools (e.g., microfluidics, correlative microscopy, in situ 3D imaging under cryo- or hydrated conditions, and bioreporters) to investigate microbial interactions; and (3) apply conventional and customized data analysis tools to interpret imaging results from across various analytical techniques. This session is supported by the “Synchrotron Earth and Environmental Science” (SEES) program funded by the National Science Foundation in the U.S., which aims to advance research and techniques that utilize synchrotron radiation facilities to Earth and Environmental studies. Interior of the Earth - Gordon Research Conference

We would like to draw your attention to the Interior of the Earth Gordon Research Conference and Gordon Research Seminar which will take place in June 2025. The 2025 Interior of the Earth Gordon Research Conference (GRC) will be held on June 22-27 at Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, Massachusetts, US). Our meeting theme is Volatiles, Melt and Viscosity: Consequences for Mantle Evolution and Climate System Interactions. Researchers at all career stages are encouraged to participate. The 2025 GRC will focus on volatiles, mantle melting processes, mantle viscosity and their consequences for the dynamics and evolution of the Earth’s interior and its interactions with the climate system. The meeting will explore the distribution of volatiles inside the Earth; their impacts on the production of partial melt and on mantle rheology; and their roles in the plate tectonic system (including volatile cycling in subduction zones), volcanic processes, metasomatic alteration of the lithosphere, mantle convection, and the evolution of Earth’s interior since its formation. We will also examine the processes that dominate the cycling of volatiles between the Earth’s interior and the atmosphere, both in the recent plate tectonic regime and billions of years ago. Another key topic is the role of mantle viscosity in determining the solid Earth response to the changing mass loads of ice sheets and sea-level. The 2025 Interior of the Earth GRC will explore the latest developments in understanding these fascinating and interwoven processes by integrating wide-ranging perspectives, including geochemistry, petrology, geodynamics, seismology, geodesy, magnetotellurics, rock deformation, mineral physics, paleomagnetism, geology, and more. We have a terrific international line-up of speakers and discussion leaders for morning and evening plenary sessions, which will include ample time for discussion. Everyone will have the chance to present their work in highly interactive poster sessions. Unscheduled afternoon time will provide opportunities for informal discussions that can lead to new collaborations and projects. The small meeting size (typically 130-140 people) will help to create a sense of community and enhance interactions between scientists from all career stages. Eggert Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Large lasers like JANUS, Omega and NIF can drive very high-pressure compression waves into all types of samples, but the techniques developed there have also been transferred to both synchrotron and XFEL external x-ray sources. I will concentrate on laser driven dynamic materials studies at these facilities, reviewing the development of EOS and diffraction experiments at large lasers and the impressive new experiments that are now possible using High quality X-ray sources. Dr. Jon H. Eggert, Chief Scientist, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Dr. Jon Eggert uses large lasers to compress materials into the High Energy Density (HED) regime. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and did post-docs at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Institute of Physics in Beijing and the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Geophysical Laboratory. Before moving to LLNL, He was a professor at Pomona College and the Colorado School of Mines, and he spend two years as a visiting scientist at the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA) de Bruyères-le-Châtel in Paris. He switched from DAC static high-pressure experiments to laser-driven dynamic-compression experiments after moving to LLNL. He led the design and implementation of pre-compressed DAC, x-ray diffraction, and ramp-compression EOS platforms at both the Omega and the NIF laser facilities. The position will be on-site in Berkeley, California. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute scientific and technical skills to synchrotron research projects in the area of rock mechanics/deformation at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Advanced Light Source’s microtomography beamline 8.3.2. The possibility exists for additional collaborations at micro-Laue diffraction beamline 12.3.2, which includes capabilities such as texture analysis and grain orientation. This role involves designing, executing and writing-up experiments, generating technical innovations and equipment modifications, and collaborating with synchrotron users to support a range of geological research projects. As a result, the position will require the postdoctoral researcher to consistently demonstrate excellent communication skills (both written and verbal). We particularly seek applicants with prior expertise in X-ray imaging (and particularly tomography) of inorganic samples, optimally with instrument or software development experience. Experience in rock physics/rock mechanics is desirable. Familiarity with image analysis/processing (including multi- dimensional) is particularly preferred.
