Hi, Last fall, the excellent folks at the Diamond Light Source invited me to present a three day XAS training course. All of my lectures and software demonstrations were recorded on camera, as were the desktop sessions on the presentation computer. The Diamond technical staff did a great job assembling all of this information into streaming videos, which they are now hosting on their web site. Here is the URL: http://www.diamond.ac.uk/Home/Events/Past_events/XAS-workshop-2011.html In total, there are several hours of videos of me presenting lectures and teaching the audience how to use the most recent versions of Athena and Artemis. The editing is great -- it transitions very nicely between the camera and the desktop. Really the only problem with the videos is that you will have to watch many hours of my ugly mug :) I'd like to thank Paul Quinn, Fred Mosselmans, and Shu Hayama for inviting me, organizing the event, and making the videos happen. If you find the videos helpful, be sure to let them know. For folks just learning XAS and for those wanting to learn how to use the newest versions of Athena and Artemis, the Diamond folk have done a very kind thing. Regards, B PS: As a Linux user, it was not immediately obvious to me how to use the Microsoft Media Server (mms:) links on the Diamond web page. Here is a hint that worked for me for viewing them from Firefox: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/747274 I configured Firefox to send the video to VLC, although any video player should work. Presumably, something similar can be done in other browsers. -- Bruce Ravel ------------------------------------ bravel@bnl.gov National Institute of Standards and Technology Synchrotron Methods Group at NSLS --- Beamlines U7A, X24A, X23A2 Building 535A Upton NY, 11973 Homepage: http://xafs.org/BruceRavel Software: https://github.com/bruceravel
Hi, I've looked through the FAQ and help pages but don't see any comments about my issue. When importing new data into Athena it crashes on my Window XP computer. The column selection window opens and it freezes. I've attached a file for you. I don't have the same problem with project files. If I create a prj file in the old Athena I can then import it to the newest version of Athena and operate with no problems. I know at least one other person who has the same issue. Thanks for your time. (See attached file: As_P2.002) Respectfully, Bradley W. Miller, Ph.D. Post Doctoral Fellow Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education U. S. Hi, could you specify which version is the newest one and old one of Athena for you? Can you try with the attached file? regards kicaj W dniu 12-08-13 15:22, BradleyW Miller pisze:

Hi Bradley, I'm using 0.9.10 on Win7 and I'm seeing the same thing. The problem might be related to initializing the plot window with the "Athena: Column Selection" dialog when the file being read has a large number of columns. I can load this file into an already-existing project without a problem, when that project already has the plot window initialized and displaying earlier data prior to loading your raw data. But if I have an empty Athena project, I can load this file if I cut it down to 2 or 4 or 12 columns, with more columns making the plot window display respond slower and slower. With all 29 columns the program just hangs. Can you take some project with data in it, and load this raw data into that project without crashing? That might be a useful workaround for the moment. -Jason If so, you might temporarily get around the problem by loading data into On Mon, Aug 13, 2012 at 4:59 PM, BradleyW Miller < Miller.BradleyW@epamail.epa.gov> wrote:

I think the problem is the line in the header that has only numbers (0.0 0.0 ....) in it. A simple thing to try would be to put a # sign at the beginning of each header line. I believe that will work, but I haven't actually tested it. Another possible issue is that the file might have inconsistent number of columns, as if an extra new line got inserted in the very long lines (I suspect this is what happened in the header). --Matt
Hi Bradley, This appears to be an example of a problem that I thought I had fixed some time ago. The thing making Athena unhappy is the length of the line of column labels in your file. This triggers a mistake in how Athena communicates with Ifeffit. I will fix this for the next release. For the short term, the best work-around I can suggest is delete the line with the column labels and replace it with hash (#) character. This will avoid the mistake Athena is making and present the column labels as numbers (1 2 3 etc) in the column selection dialog. Obviously that will be a hassle if you have a mountain of data....
