Shipping

Sample shipments to/from Argonne have separate requirements according to their status as non-hazardous or hazardous.

Non-Hazardous Materials

Non-hazardous samples (including dry shippers without liquid), materials, and tools may be shipped to Argonne, or transported by the user. Please contact your local Safety Office for assistance with proper shipping methods. Packages should be addressed as follows:

  • Monday - Friday (except Holidays)

  • Weekends and Holidays
    Let your CARS contact person know your container will arrive on the weekend or holiday so that a gate pass can be arranged for the delivery person. The shipment must be sent to the Argonne Guest House, addressed to a person in your group who has a reservation there. Address the container to :

Hazardous Materials

Users are NOT allowed to bring or ship hazardous or infectious substances directly to CARS. These substances are materials identified as hazardous by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) or International Air Transport Association (IATA), such as liquid nitrogen, propane, freon or ethane, and biological samples that are identified as hazardous by DOT or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These substances must be shipped to the address given below.

Under no circumstances may users transport a nonexempt hazardous or bio-hazardous material to the APS in their own vehicles.

Otherwise, to have a hazardous material shipped to CARS, please inform your CARS contact person of the shipment and address the package to:

All substances MUST be packaged and labeled according to the DOT regulations or Argonne National Lab Receiving will refuse to accept the shipment. Please contact your local Safety Office for assistance with proper shipping methods.
