*Exploring Dynamic Properties of Earth and Planetary Materials Using Neutron and X-Ray Methods* Integration of beamline technologies and rock deformation experiments can facilitate the investigation of the feedback between evolving mechanical properties, deformation textures, and deformation mechanisms, leading to much more robust extrapolation of lab-based rheological models to Earth and other planets. The NSF-funded Research Coordination Network (RCN) “In Situ Studies of Rock Deformation” (ISRD) aims at developing novel methods that exploit the beamline capabilities, enabling the next generation of rock deformation experiments, wherein samples can be examined while they are deforming. The 4th ISRD-RCN workshop, hosted by *the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL)* and *the University of Grenoble Alpes* will take place in-person at ILL <https://www.thehotelumd.com/>/ESRF campus on May 21-23, 2024. This workshop will focus on neutron and X-ray scattering and imaging as well as their applications in studying the dynamic properties of earth and planetary materials. X-ray Beamline Scientist Dynamic Compression Sector at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory We invite talented experimentalist to apply for the X-ray Beamline Scientist position at the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) - a first-of-its-kind capability dedicated to dynamic compression science that is operated by Washington State University (WSU). With a focus on x-ray diffraction and imaging measurements in materials subjected to dynamic compression, the DCS provides in-situ, time-resolved, measurements at microscopic length scales to achieve a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms governing a broad range of time-dependent, condensed matter phenomena (structural transformations, inelastic deformation and fracture, and chemical reactions) under dynamic loading. The successful candidate will operate and maintain x-ray and optical diagnostics, including state-of-the art x-ray optics and high-energy experimental equipment to support a broad range of user experiments and advance the DCS capabilities. Representative responsibilities include: * Support and maintain the DCS x-ray beamline components including vacuum systems, large Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) focusing mirror systems, and x-ray beam choppers and shutters. * Design and implement experimental components and custom control systems used on the x-ray beamline and in the experimental end stations with a focus on developing efficient automation, coding, and data acquisition/analysis software. * Initiate and participate in research activities including new types of x-ray measurements and analyses. * Interacting with users to conduct time-resolved dynamic compression experiments using x-ray techniques, such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), phase-contrast Imaging (PCI), and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). This includes setting up and characterizing the x-ray beam for users. * Contribute effectively to all aspects of the research projects including assistance to DCS users; maintenance of the experimental facilities; and working effectively in a team setting. * Independently define and complete experimental projects and tasks. This WSU position is located at Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, Illinois. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field with a strong experimental background in condensed physics. The Carnegie Institution for Science seeks applications for an experimental postdoctoral position focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel materials produced under high-pressure conditions. The position will involve the use of equipment including diamond anvil cells and large-volume presses (Paris-Edinburgh / multianvil) to synthesize novel materials with an emphasis on extended covalent frameworks, as well as physical properties characterization under both high-pressure and ambient conditions. The successful candidate will work closely in a team comprised of experimental and computational physicists, chemists, and materials scientists. Dear Bob, Thank you for sending us the news. I’m very sorry to hear Yuriy Litvin passed away. Yuriy was very friendly, and I enjoyed to discuss with him on some topics on mantle mineralogy at several international conferences. In 2003, he came to my lab in Tokyo with his young colleague, Andrey Bobrov, to discuss our collaboration. Later, Andrey stayed in my lab for six months to conduct multi-anvil experiments on Na-bearing majorite garnet, and our joint work was published in GCA, 2008. May his soul rest in peace. Dear Bob, Thank you for letting us know. I am sorry to hear about Yuriy’s passing. I have found memories of Yuriy from the early 1990s when we both worked at the Mineral Physics Institute in Stony Brook, carrying out high-pressure experiments in the 2000-ton press. Yuriy, Svetlana, his wife, and I also shared an apartment at that time. We had many lively and unforgettable dinners together with other friends. As part of our ongoing effort to introduce synchrotron techniques to the rock deformation community, ISRD-RCN and Berkeley Lab will hold a hands-on workshop on April 4-5, 2024 at the Advanced Light Source, Berkeley, CA. The workshop will focus on Nanotomography techniques in rock deformation experiments at synchrotron beamlines. *Tentative Agenda* *April 4, 2024: Background* *Morning*: Introduction of Nanogeoscience and X-ray Tomography 1.
