Polymorphism of Superionic Ice: Static vs Dynamic Compression Dr. Vitali Pakapenka Center for Advanced Radiations Sources The University of Chicago Date: Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 2 p.m. ET Abstract: Water is abundant in natural environments, but its structure and physical properties at ultra extreme conditions remain uncertain. A family of superionic ices with highly mobile protons within the stable oxygen sublattice has been predicted at high pressures in a pressure-temperature phase space that borders the familiar high-pressure solid ices and the fluid. However, the existence of superionic ices, their phase boundaries, and the location of the melting line have been challenging to assess due to the extreme difficulties and uncertainties in both theory and experiments, which yielded contradictory results depending on the techniques applied and data interpretation. Here I will present results of recent measurements on superionic phase boundaries determined at different experimental conditions with extensive comparison to available static and dynamic data including theoretical simulations. Unique properties of superionic phases will be discussed in the light of understanding the pathway of phase transitions in the time-domain experiments. Biography: Dr. Pakapenka’s research interests are in the field of the solid-state physics, which is dedicated to understand how extreme conditions (both static and dynamic) affect the physical and chemical properties of materials: structure, phase transition, melting, partitioning, chemical reaction, diffusion, elasticity etc. that can be used for realistic modeling of the composition and dynamics of the terrestrial and giant planet interiors, development of theoretical models. His current primary focus is pushing the limits of ultra-high pressure and temperature experiments to 1 TPa and 10,000 K, which will permit in situ experiments addressing the phase diagrams of compounds relevant to giant planet interiors, light element partitioning between molten iron alloys and silicates, and the synthesis of novel high-pressure materials. Dr. Prakapenka received his Ph.D. in Solid State Physics from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institut. He was a researcher at the Advanced Materials research Laboratory at the Gomel State University in Belarus. Theme 2 "Chemistry and Dynamics of Earth's Interior" covers all aspects of planetary processes from core segregation to today. By integrating the finds from various fields of study, such as geochemistry, geodynamics, geophysics, petrology, and mineral physics-be it through experiments, observations, or theories-we gain profound insights into the inner workings of our planet and its dynamic interaction with the surface across space and time. In this theme, we encourage disciplinary and interdisciplinary session proposals on the chemical and physical processes occurring in the Earth's interior across all scales of time and space, the nature of material and energy exchange between the interior and surface, insights into deep reservoirs including the upper mantle, transition zone, lower mantle, outer and inner core, as well as interactions between the crust, mantle and core and their evolution over time. Best, Suki Dorfman Open Rank Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Earth and Planetary Materials - Michigan State University The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks applications for an endowed open-rank tenure-track position in Earth and planetary materials. Successful applicants will be expected to demonstrate a record of sustained productivity through intellectual leadership in peer-reviewed publications and external grants. Responsibilities for the position include the teaching of undergraduate courses in the department as well as mentoring of graduate and postdoctoral trainees. Service is expected via the participation in committees, courses, and training activities, and participation in department, campus, and national programs, as appropriate for the career stage and rank. Michigan State University is a large R-1 university that actively promotes interdisciplinary research and offers unique resources including the Kellogg Biological Station (KBS), DOE Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), and the Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research (ICER). MSU's Earth and Environmental Sciences is a growing department on the leading edge of change in geoscience. We share a common interest in solving problems of the natural world and acknowledge the value of interdisciplinary approaches to achieve these goals. Our current solid Earth research directions include experimental mineralogy, geodesy, planetary science, seismology, geodynamics, igneous petrology and geochemistry. We offer substantial resources for graduate funding and undergraduate research to achieve these goals. Qualifications Outstanding candidates at any rank will be considered. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Earth and planetary sciences, or a related field, before the position start date; a record of active research and peer-reviewed publications in topics related to Earth and planetary materials and commensurate to the candidate's career stage; and readiness to teach courses related to Earth materials, geologic processes, and/or natural resources. Preferred research areas for this position include, but are not limited to, physical and/or chemical properties of Earth and planetary materials, petrology and geochemistry, or critical minerals and resources. A record of external research funding is desired for candidates seeking a position at the Assistant Professor level, but required for candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level. Also preferred is the ability of the candidate to complement current departmental research and funding strengths. We also require that candidates demonstrate, through their research, teaching, and/or service, contributions to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Preference will be given to candidates who can broaden opportunities and experiences for students in field observation, laboratory analysis, and/or Earth and environmental careers.
