Dear all, I’m pleased to introduce Fahad Sajid as the new Executive Administrator for SEES. Fahad is an experienced administrator in academic settings, most recently as Director of Training Programs and Communications for the Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) at the University of Chicago. He holds a PhD in Political Science and will be located at the SEES central office in Chicago. As SEES Executive Administrator, Fahad is a primary point of contact for administrative aspects of SEES and will play a key role in SEES communications. Dear Colleagues, We are writing to highlight GSA session T113: Synchrotron X-ray and Neutron Applications in Earth and Environmental Science. The GSA Connects 2024 conference is being held in Anaheim, California from September 22-25, 2024. We encourage a broad range of submissions sharing results, perspectives, and advances in the use of synchrotron X-rays and neutrons to probe questions in Earth and environmental science. Si Athena Chen, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Cara Santelli, University of Minnesota Joanne Stubbs, The University of Chicago Synchrotron X-ray and Neutron Applications in Earth and Environmental Science X-ray and neutron techniques complement each other in exploring the intrinsic properties of minerals and materials. The high-penetrating power of synchrotron X-rays and neutrons, combined with recent advancements in instrumentation and computational approaches, have revolutionized many scientific disciplines, including mineralogy, (bio)geochemistry, petrology, soil science, sedimentology, oceanography, cosmochemistry, and ore deposits, etc. Synchrotron facilities provide a diverse array of X-ray instruments, each with unique capabilities such as high temporal and spatial resolution, flexible sample environments, low detection limits, coherence, and a multitude of 2/3D imaging options. The advancement in synchrotron X-ray technology has propelled Earth science research in various aspects, ranging from low to high-temperature/pressure crystallography, in-operando studies of mineral-water reaction and nanoparticle formation, and 3D imaging of trace elements, among other applications. Neutron scattering offers additional numerous advantages and is instrumental in investigating various mineral properties. These include the study of lattice dynamics of minerals and molecular systems, hydroxyl bonding environments in minerals, in-situ studies of structure under extreme conditions, diffusive processes in solids, mimicking reactions at surfaces and in interiors of planetary bodies, examining the nature of porous materials, imaging with elemental and isotopic contrast, as well as magnetic phase transitions. This session welcomes contributions from researchers that have used synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering in their studies. We aim to explore a broad spectrum of their applications in advancing geosciences and related fields. We also welcome submissions detailing current or planned synchrotron/neutron beamline capabilities that contribute to advancements in geoscience research. Dear all, We are advertising a 3-year ERC-funded Ph.D. position. The ERC project LECOR aims to refine compositional models of the Earth's inner core, particularly the nature of its light elements. The candidate will conduct experiments to determine the elastic and plastic properties of various iron-bearing alloys and compounds at conditions of the deep Earth's interior. Experiments at high-pressure-temperature conditions will be performed at ID14 of the ESRF and also at other beamlines specializing in the experiments under extreme conditions. The project is focused on the synthesis and characterization of new light-element superconductors including hydrides, borides & carbides with the goal of producing conventional, high-Tc materials that remain stable without extreme pressures. The position will involve the synthesis of new materials using conventional, non-equilibrium and high-pressure methods, and subsequent structure/properties characterization. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic environment with an expert team comprised of experimental and computational physicists, chemists, and materials scientists. Dear all, I’m pleased to introduce Emily Padston as the new Outreach & Inclusion Officer and Associate Director for SEES. Emily was previously the Executive Director for two other NSF-funded programs at the University of Chicago, Data Science for Energy and Environmental Research and the Center for Robust Decision-making on Climate and Energy Policy. She has a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University and a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University. Emily lives in the South Loop of Chicago with her husband, 1-year-old son, and two cats. She enjoys reading a variety of fiction books, trying tasting menus, and exploring the Midwest after spending most of her time on the East Coast. As SEES Outreach & Inclusion Officer, Emily will lead the coordination of all outreach, education, and inclusion activities within the SEES organization and is the point of contact for collaborations in this area.
