Dear High-Pressure Mineral Physics Community, The School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University (ASU) is pleased to announce its eligibility to host planetary astronomy postdoctoral fellows through the Heising-Simons Foundation 51 Pegasi b Postdoctoral Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship offers a four-year tenure, with applications due by October 4th of this year. There are 20+ eligible institutions and 8 fellowships are offered each year. Prospective applicants cannot be more than 2 years (no earlier than Jan 1 2023) post-PhD (a change from last year). The fellowship welcomes research in the mineral physics study of exoplanets, among other areas of interest. The Shim group at ASU offers a range of experimental research projects utilizing a range of high-pressure techniques to understand various exoplanet types (e.g., super-Earths and sub-Neptunes) in combination with synchrotron (APS-U and ALS), XFEL (LCLS), and Omega EP laser facilities. The research will focus on synchrotron X-ray spectromicroscopy and complementary approaches. The person hired will join a collaborative team of technical experts and contribute to design and early scientific commissioning of future X-ray spectromicroscopy instruments. Building new scientific collaborations with SEES users and contributing to workshops and related online training resources will also be priorities for the person in this position. See the abstract below for more detail. *MR002 - A Journey into Planetary Interiors: How the Properties and Interactions of Planetary Materials Drive Dynamical Processes and Shape Planets and Moons* The thermal and dynamic evolution in the interiors of planetary bodies is controlled by the chemical and physical properties of their mineralogical and icy components. The advances made in exploring planets within and beyond our solar system show that the Earth’s structure and dynamic processes are only one possibility. Furthermore, novel experimental and theoretical techniques allow us to gain insight into their enigmatic interiors. We welcome abstracts aimed at unraveling the physical and thermal properties, ranging from micro- to macro-scale, of mantle- and core-forming phases in rocky and icy worlds. We seek insights into how these properties affect the dynamics and evolution of planets, for example implications of minerals’ microscopic properties on macroscopic petrofabrics and global processes like mantle convection.
