As neutrons are complimentary to X-rays, we’re happy to share important reminders and some updates to help you make the most of your experience with neutron scattering: I. Upcoming Proposal Deadline: The submission of neutron general user (GU) proposals<https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://neutrons.ornl.gov/users/proposal-calls__… > to HB2C-WAND² at HFIR is due by March 4, 2026, 12 pm EST. Proposals awarded beam time will be scheduled to run from Sep to Dec 2026 during the 2026-B cycle (fuel cycles 517-519). HFIR is a reactor-based neutron source that provides constant wavelength neutrons for experiments. II. Instrument Upgrade expanding the range of experiments you can perform: 1. 23 Automated Sample Changer: Our belt-driven automated sample changer, capable of measuring 23 powder samples from 2K-300K, is available for both Mail-in and GU proposals. 2. 7-position spinning automated sample changer: Enables room-temperature (RT) measurements with continuous sample rotation during data collection to reduce preferred orientation; well suited for biomaterials and geomaterials. 3. Mail-in Program for powder diffraction: We accept mail-in samples to be measured with the belt-driven automated sample changer from 2-100K and 300K. APS 2026-2 Proposal Call A Reminder to All Interested SEES Users that the Deadline for new APS Proposals and Experiment Time Requests against existing proposals for the 2026-2 Run Cycle is rapidly approaching. The deadline is March 4, 2026 at 2:00 PM (Central Standard Time). All SEES beamlines at the APS (Sector 13, 3-ID, 6-BM-B) will be accepting general user proposals. Submit new general user proposals or time requests against existing proposals (ETR's) using the Universal Proposal System: https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://ups.servicenowservices.com/ups__;!!G_uCf… Users submitting new proposals are strongly encouraged to reach out to beamline staff before submission to evaluate any feasibility questions. Infrared Microscope Project (and other news)

Hi folks, Happy Friday! A few things to share with the SEES community: I. Continuum Infrared Microscope at NSLS-II: BIC project update The BioImaging Core (BIC) of the NSLS-II/CBMS is rebuilding a Nicolet Continuum Infrared Microscope that was routinely used for Environmental Sciences at the original NSLS. BIC is collaborating with the 22-IR lead beamline scientist and team to integrate the IR microscope into the 22-IR photon delivery system. Replacing the glowbar source with synchrotron IR light significantly improves the spatial resolution and speed of the Continuum Infrared Microscope. One phase of the refurbishment project involved the vendor replacing the spectrometer unit, and this work has been completed. Another phase of the project that is currently underway is contracting with the vendor to reverse the handedness of the system so that it can be easily integrated into 22-IR. This procurement is now funded and underway, and the work should be completed in the coming months. Stay tuned for opportunities to get involved with early commissioning activities. New large-field-of-view XRF Imaging Station The BioImaging Core (BIC) is also responsible for a new X-ray Fluorescence Imaging station that covers a broad range of energies (5 source targets) for sensitivity to both light (eg P) and heavy elements (eg U) with spatial resolutions ranging from 5 to 15 microns. Over the past few decades, observations of exotic bonding behaviors, complex stoichiometries, and low-symmetry arrangements in simple and binary systems—including noble-gas compounds—have progressively reshaped our picture of Earth’s structure and evolution, as well as processes such as volcanism and tectonics. Rather than a relatively simple, uniform deep Earth that can be described as consisting of a few high-symmetry phases, we now envision a more mineralogically differentiated and chemically intricate planet, where minor constituents can play major roles. This view aligns with the heterogeneities revealed by seismology. The exotic nature of bonding and crystal chemistry that governs Earth’s inner structure and dynamics is gradually being uncovered, yet remains far from fully understood and generalized. This session brings together experimental and theoretical studies that advance our understanding of the chemistry, bonding, and resulting physical properties of matter in planetary deep interiors, as well as the extreme-condition static and dynamic processes that shape planetary compositions and structures. These include the identification of new compounds and phases, determinations of material properties at high pressure, and investigations of bonding mechanisms under extreme conditions. We also seek contributions that articulate open problems and challenges warranting further investigation. Deciphering high-pressure structures and properties relies on demanding and sophisticated experimental and theoretical tools.
