The project will focus on the effect of pressure, temperature, iron content, and strain rate on the plastic deformation of ferro-periclase (Mg,Fe)O. It is funded by the ANR collaborative grant MIN-DIXI. It will involve deformation experiment in large volume presses at synchrotron sources, laser-driven compression at free electron lasers, and electron microscopy. Assistant Beamline Scientist – Diffraction/Imaging/Microscopy at high pressure-temperature-strain rate conditions at HPCAT (RD2/RD3). The High-Pressure Collaborative Access Team (HPCAT) located at sector 16 of the Advanced Photon Source is currently seeking a beamline scientist to provide support for conducting research at extreme pressure-temperature conditions. The primary focus of this role will be to advance the applications of cutting edge, synchrotron-based, static, and time-resolved, high P-T research and enable transformational scientific discoveries in material science, physics, and chemistry. We are seeking a candidate with expertise in laser heating systems, but candidates with broader qualifications/background will be also considered. The ideal candidate will have the following responsibilities in the field of high-pressure research: * Pioneering innovative techniques and methodologies * Providing support for user activities at HPCAT beamlines * Advancing applications in fields that include extreme pressure-temperature-strain rate studies of material response. * Close collaboration with users and other members of HPCAT to develop and nurture a broad research program that brings several probes to bear and leverages rapidly developing computational tools. * Advance synchrotron instrumentation and scientific experimental techniques that leverage APS-U and the concomitant HPCAT upgrade. * Coordinating with engineers and support staff to facilitate commissioning and bringing HPCAT on-line post upgrade. * Reporting project progress, scientific progress, and research appropriately to colleagues, the HPCAT management and the wider user community. Two Open Rank Tenure/-Track Faculty Positions in Earth and Environmental Sciences - Michigan State University The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks applications for two endowed tenure-track open rank positions: 1. Earth Surface Processes and Global Change: Seeking candidates providing fundamental constraints on Earth's environmental evolution via the geologic record-broadly defined to include rocks, ice, soils, and sediments on multiple timescales. This includes, but is not limited to, cryospheric, paleontological, oceanographic, geochemical, or climate evolution. Candidates will be expected to teach courses related to environmental processes and evolution from the geologic record. 2. Earth Materials and Resources: Seeking candidates studying earth materials, or earth processes related to geologic resources. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, properties of earth materials, ores and critical minerals, or geology-based energy transition solutions. Candidates will be expected to teach courses related to earth materials, geologic processes, and natural resources. For both positions, preference will be given to candidates whose observationally grounded research employs cutting-edge or novel approaches, and may include experimental, analytical, remote sensing, or computational methods. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in geological or earth and environmental sciences, or a related field, with publications relevant to the position of interest. Post-doctoral and applicable teaching experience are desired. We also require that candidates demonstrate, through their research, teaching, and/or service, contributions to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. These searches are aimed at the Assistant Professor level, although the positions are open rank and exceptional candidates at any level will be considered. Funding for these positions will be supplemented by the EES departmental endowment. Research expectations include consistent productivity demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and success with external grants. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in the candidate's area of interest as well as graduate and postdoctoral training. Service will include participation in committees, courses, and training associated with these positions at MSU, and participation in department, campus, and national programs as appropriate.
