Dear all, I am just getting started with XAFS projects and I am using Athena software for processing and analysing the data. I am learning how to use it, and I have a little problem. The thing is that when I plot the XANES data, the automatic created plot is not labeled and plus it doesn't have the option of selecting a point of the spectrum. I mean, when I want to choose E0 for example, I need to do it changing the number in the Athena screen, and I don't know exactly what I am choosing because it doesn't appear anything in the graph. Was I clear? Do you know any way which I could solve it? Thank you very much, Regards, Irina Pi.

Irina, You have not provided quite enough information for us to understand the nature of your problem. Here are some hints on asking good questions on the mailing list: http://bruceravel.github.io/demeter/documents/SinglePage/bugs.html http://bruceravel.github.io/demeter/documents/SinglePage/help.html In this case, it would help to know: * what kind of computer you are using. if the answer is a mac, your question is answered explicitly on the Demeter home page, http://bruceravel.github.io/demeter/#mac -- scroll down to the troubleshooting section * I don't understand the label situation. It would help if you attached a picture (not a Word document, not a powerpoint file, but a picture) showing us what you are seeing. * it may even be helpful to see a project file that demonstrates your issue -- that allows someone to reproduce and observe the problem In any case, even without being able to pluck a point from the plot, you have figured out the sensible work-around. Hello,
I work with a Windows computer and my data is like in the attached file data5.txt. Some days ago with an old version of Demeter (I think 0.9.18 but I'm not sure) I could have the plots I attach in Plot1.png and Plot2.png, but I don't know why there were some options in the program which were blocked (like forward Fourier transform parameters, rbkg, spline...). So I decided to install the latest version of Demeter (0.9.24) and then instead of obtaining the same plots I can only get the ones in Plot3.png and Plot4.png. They are not labeled and it also doesn't appear an E or pointer to choose values directly in the plot.
Someone knows how to obtain again plots similar to 1 and 2?
Thank you very much,
best regards.
Irina Pi.

I have never seen that behavior. Some questions: 1. Go to the preferences tool (http://bruceravel.github.io/demeter/documents/Athena/other/prefs.html). What is the value of gnuplot-->terminal? How about gnuplot-->termparams? 2. Start Athena. Import one data group. Then, in the Monitor menu, select "Show command buffer." (http://bruceravel.github.io/demeter/documents/Athena/ui/monitor.html#the-mon...). Copy and paste /all/ of the text from the bottom half -- the box labeled "Plot buffer" into an email so I can see the entire contents of that text box. Please note, there will likely be text above and below what is visible. I need to see /everything/, not just the visible part. If none of that solves the problem, I'll have you try some more things. Hi, here there are the questions:
1. gnuplot --> terminal: wxt (both your value and Demeter's value)
gnuplot --> termparams: enhanced dashed (both your value and Demeter's value)
2. Attached file
Thank you so so much.

It looks like you have installed Demeter into administrator disk space -- here is what it says in what you sent me: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\demeter My suspicion is that you are running Athena as a normal user but that the plotting program is not able to access font data because of some kind of access control issue. I suppose that we could try to figure this out, but I don't much about administering Windows machines at this level and I don't know much about setting access control for such things. Seems to me that the easiest solution would be to download the latest version of Demeter and install it into your normal diskspace, which is the default location. Hi, I don't know why but it didn't work. I installed in the Local disk C, and there is the same problem.
Do you have any other idea on what could I do?
Thank you,

Demeter uses a program called gnuplot as its plotting back end. What happens when you fire up gnuplot directly and try to make a plot? This is done by going to the Start Menu, Demeter with Strawberry Perl, then Gnuplot shell. (Alternately, in the file manager, go to the location where you installed Demeter, then 'c\bin\gnuplot\bin', then double click on "wgnuplot.exe".) It'll look like what's shown here: http://www.maths.manchester.ac.uk/~pjohnson/Gnuplot/windows_gnuplot.html At the command prompt, type plot sin(x) It should be a sine wave and the tics on both axes should have numeric labels and the legend should say "sin(x)". If not, hopefully it will provide some feedback that hints to the problem. I am suspicious that your anti-virus software might be blocking access to some file needed by gnuplot to manage fonts. That's something you might look into (or get help from your IT department). Oh yes, maybe here's the problem. When I try to open the Gnuplot shell it says: "Entry point not found. The procedure entry point_vswprintf could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll".
Maybe I should try to install gnuplot separately?
Thanks,
Irina Pi.

I remain suspicious of your anti virus software. You should check the AV logs and see if they quarantined any files around the time you installed Demeter. As I said up front, I have never seen this problem before and no one has ever reported anything like it to the mailing list. I am not trying to dodge responsibility, but nothing you've said so far indicates that there is a problem with Demeter or the installer. It really seems to me like the problem is your AV software or some other aspect of how your computer is administered. As always, I am 100% open to being convinced otherwise.
Maybe I should try to install gnuplot separately?
You could, I suppose. That might help track down the problem. You will need to configure Demeter to find the newly installed gnuplot, or it won't help your problem with Athena. That is, Athena is configured to look for a specific copy of gnuplot in a specific location. That location can be changed, but it won't happen automagically if you install gnuplot in some other way. By the way, when you say "Windows computer", what version do you actually mean? 32 bit or 64? B -- Bruce Ravel ------------------------------------ bravel@bnl.gov National Institute of Standards and Technology Synchrotron Science Group at NSLS-II Building 743, Room 114 Upton NY, 11973 Homepage: http://bruceravel.github.io/home/ Software: https://github.com/bruceravel Demeter: http://bruceravel.github.io/demeter/
Maybe you were right about the anti virus software, but finally I've solved installing an older version of Demeter, 0.9.13, and updating to 0.9.18.2 (any other version worked). I guess my computer is so old (it is 64bit by the way).
Though this is solved now, I have a problem with some options of the main window (spline range, forward and backward fourier transforms) because they are blocked when I import my data (see the attached screenshot data6.png), whereas with an example data of your webpage they are not (see the attached screenshot fe.060.png). I cannot figure out what happens, maybe there's a problem in the way I save the data (see attached file test_OD_6.txt)?
Thank you so much and sorry for all the questions, I have no doubt that there are no problems with Demeter, but it's me that I am just getting into this world and cannot figure out so many things.

Dear Irina, it seems your data range is only about 100 eV long. during the import you can choose the data type, for data shorter than some pre-set limit (definitely longer than 100 eV) Athena - rightly I would say - assumes that you are importing "XANES" data. In that case the 2 greyed out functions are senseless. If for any reason you want to use these two functions you must change "data type" to mue(E) in the import data window. Oh that's true thank you so much. But with my data, mhen I select the mue(E) instead of XANES (just to see if then the options appear), nothing happens..
