Subject: [Ifeffit] Ifeffit and gfortran (was: iffefit compile on BlueWhite64) To: "XAFS Analysis using Ifeffit" Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Hi Chachi, all
I believe I have a source kit that will build correctly for you using gfortran. I've tested on three different generations of Fedora/Redhat linux systems, one with only g77, one with only gfortran, and one with both, and the installation now works on all of them.
Please try http://cars9.uchicago.edu/~ifeffit/src/ifeffit-1.2.10_rc1.tar.gz
With this tar ball, you will need to install pgplot: tar xvzf ifeffit-1.2.10_rc1.tar.gz cd ifeffit-1.2.10 sh PGPLOT_install ./configure make make install
(doing the two 'install steps' with sufficient privilege). Again, you need to install PGPLOT with the provided script. Both the PGPLOT and Ifeffit installations will use gfortran if available, and g77 if gfortran is not available. I think it would not be too difficult to attempt to use Intel's ifort compiler or g95, though I do not know that it's needed-- all linux distribution come with gcc so have easy-to-use packages for gfortran (and, for "legacy", g77).
I did get horae-065 and the python wrappers to build with no trouble (once the Tk modules were installed) on all systems, though I haven't done much more than trivial testing.
Since I tested only on a few linux boxes, I'd be interested in hearing reports for other systems.
I'll wait a few days (or more) to hear reports before uploading this as ifeffit-1.2.10.
--Matt
Hi Chachi, Please try the _rc2.tar.gz -- one serious problem was found that you haven't gotten to yet! You won't need to reinstall PGPLOT, just ifeffit. I think you may need to do a couple things: 1. I've noticed some failures during Perl/Tk 'make test' procedure. You may need to override the "normal" CPAN installation, by going to the CPAN build directory and installing by hand (assuming root): cd /root/.cpan/build/Tk-804.027/ perl Makefile.PL make install 2. You may get stuck during the horae build with a complaint about Chemistry::Elements. Doing this seems to fix the problem: cd horae-0.65 perl Makefile.PL make (proceeds, but eventually fails) rm -f 0CPAN/Chemistry-Elements-1.01/pm_to_blib make make install Hope that helps, --Matt

Perl modules need to be installed in a place where Perl will find them. This usually "just happens" -- except when it doesn't ;-) At the command line, do "perl -V". Along with lots of other stuff, that will tell you perl's include path. Things need to be installed in one of those places. Most linux distributions hace a perl/Tk package. It is usually easiest to use the package manager rather than installing by hand. Hello, One of my student faced with a 'strange ' problem with the last version of Athena (ifeffit 1.2.11.exe ) He is using a laptop Acer ASPIRE ONE (screen size 9.2 inch) running under windows XP. The size of the window in the open-file dialog of athena is too big, so that the lower part of the dialog containing the magic button 'OK' is hidden (please see attached pdf file). We found no way to assess to this part, and consequently we are not able to open a data file. Changing screen resolution on Windows does not help. Has someone else already experienced this kind of problem? Thanks in advance Gleb Pokrovski
Hi Gleb After loading your spectrum/spectra, the "OK" button is automatically selected therefore if you are not going through the different tabs available (preprocess, bin), you should be able to move a step forward by pressing "enter". What you can also do is drag the window as high as you can and expand the window at the bottom. That should give you just enough for you to be able to click on the "OK" button. Hope this helps Gael -----Original Message----- From: ifeffit-bounces@millenia.cars.aps.anl.gov [mailto:ifeffit-bounces@millenia.cars.aps.anl.gov] On Behalf Of Gleb Pokrovski Sent: 03 February 2009 13:53 To: XAFS Analysis using Ifeffit Subject: [Ifeffit] too large screen size of the open-file dialog in Athena Hello, One of my student faced with a 'strange ' problem with the last version of Athena (ifeffit 1.2.11.exe ) He is using a laptop Acer ASPIRE ONE (screen size 9.2 inch) running under windows XP. Thanks a lot, Gael, It works, indeed!!, provided that you DO NOT click with the mouse on the right hand part of the open-file dialog where the datafile is displayed. If you do so, the OK button is desactivated, and pressing 'entrer' does not work. In contrast, no way to drag the window up; even at its highest position the OK button is not accessible on that particular computer. Gleb

Hi, Pokrovski. It seems that it is not the problem with the program. Maybe you can resize the open-file dialog window by your mouse. Good luck Yongjun

Hi Gleb, I have seent his problem before, but it has always been possible to "find" the OK button by grabbing the bottom part of the top border of the window and dragging the window all the way to the top of the screen. So this is a pretty bad situation. It will be hard for me to fix this properly without access to the laptop. I am surprised that changing the screen resolution doesn't help. I have a suggestion. It's a bit cumbersome. There is no convenient way to change the fonts used by Athena, but there is an inconvenient way: 1. Fire up Athena 2. Click on Edit preferences from the Setting menu 3. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and open the "fonts" group 4. Click on one of the fonts. 5. You will see a message about how there is no interactive way to change fonts, In red text, Athena should tell you the location of the file that contains Athena's configuration. 6. Open that file with a text editor (like Wordpad -- do NOT use Word or some other word processor). 7. Scroll to the bottom of that file and reduce the numbers for each kind of font. That is, change "9" to "8", "10" to "9", and so on. 8. Save the file and fire up Athena again. Let me know if that helps. Thank you Bruce, Dragging the windows to the very top did not make the OK button accessible on that computer. In constant, editing the athena.ini file helps! We were obliged to reduce the font sizes by a factor of 1.5 from the initial values, however, to see the OK button, all font sizes are between 7 and 6 on this computer now. It is a little bit small, but the guy is happy and able to work. Another solution would be that proposed by Gael, provided you don't click on the right part of the dialog. Thank all of you again. Gleb
