Hi Claire,
Am not sure if there's something else happening with your install, but when I go to load a data file, until I hit ok to load it, Athena displays the "you have not used any memory yet" message along the bottom as no file is yet loaded (perhaps stating the obvious!). I found on an old pc I used, the resolution was not high enough to display the ok button, but hitting return when the columns loaded did the job anyway.
If you have been clicking on lots of other buttons in the data column window, keep hitting tab until the "clear reference channels" button is selected, hit it once more to then select the ok button (which you can't see) and then hit return. Hopefully your file will load!
Of course, if there is something else the problem with your install this won't work.
Hope it helps,
Steve

Hi Bruce,
Here are some snapshots of my screen. As you may see, no error
messages in the terminal and no OK button. The snapshots can be a
little bit misleading because the cursor is in fact running (little
wheel rolling and rolling on).
Everything is gray and I cannot do anything else than closing the
"data columns" window, which allows me to take control over, but
without any file loaded.
Claire
PS: Don't pay attention to the quality of the data, they are ugly. :-)

Claire,
Can you take a screenshot and post that? I'd like to see what you are talking about.
Also, are any error messages written to the screen when you start Athena from a terminal window?

Hello,
You are right, this is exactly by googling that I have found that I was not alone to have this problem!
I did change the fonts to have all windows entirely visible, but it did not improve. Still stuck with no OK in view. Indeed, it seems that the application waits for me.
I am in Gnome, but I don't think it's the point, otherwise it would work under Windows in Virtualbox, no...? I am not an expert in GUI however.

Is your problem related to question 13 at

Are you a KDE user? The "everything is grey" could be a kwin visual cue that the application is waiting for input that you cannot find because the column selection dialog is off the bottom of the screen.
