What we've used at DND-CAT is a box-car type averaging to grid the data.  Basically, impose a 0.05 A-1 grid and bin all points that lie between a starting and ending point of each point on the grid.  Of course, at DND we have data that has been collected at 12.5 kHz, so there are plenty of points to average and get statistical information with...
