[Sees_users] Call for Application: Nanotomography Workshop at ALS, April 4-5, 2024
As part of our ongoing effort to introduce synchrotron techniques to the rock deformation community, ISRD-RCN and Berkeley Lab will hold a hands-on workshop on April 4-5, 2024 at the Advanced Light Source, Berkeley, CA. The workshop will focus on Nanotomography techniques in rock deformation experiments at synchrotron beamlines. *Tentative Agenda* *April 4, 2024: Background* *Morning*: Introduction of Nanogeoscience and X-ray Tomography 1. ALS Tour 2. Nanogeoscience fundamentals 3. Intro to practical Nanotomography *Afternoon*: hands-on/demo 1. Sample mounting demo/practice 2. Cell assembly preparation 3. Mechanical stage setup and testing in 11.3.1 *Evening*: Group Dinner *April 5, 2024: Hands-on experiments and data analysis* *Morning*: Sample scans 1. Sample mounting and scanning 2. Additional scanning and reconstruction 3. Software troubleshooting *Afternoon*: Data analysis demo 1. Filtering 2. Segmentation 3. Quantification *Adjourn* This workshop is open to all researchers who are interested in conducting in-situ studies of rock deformation, with priority given to graduate students and early career scientists. If you are interested in participating, please send your application to Wen-lu Zhu (wzhu@umd.edu). The application should include: 1) A brief CV 2) A statement of research interests describing how this workshop could help advance your research Once your application is approved by the steering committee, ISRD will provide travel support (up to $1200) for your trip to ALS. To provide hands-on experience, the workshop is limited to 10 participants. The application deadline is February 15, 2024, or when all slots are filled, whichever comes first. -- Dr. Wen-lu Zhu Professor Department of Geology University of Maryland
