Nuclear Resonant Spectroscopy (NRS) takes advantage of low-energy nuclear resonances found in specific isotopes, such as Fe-57, to probe the local chemical environment and atomic vibrational dynamics within materials that contain these isotopes. This presentation will highlight NRS capabilities at the Advanced Photon Source and detail quantities that can be measured using this method that would be of interest to researchers in the Earth sciences. Two closely related techniques will be briefly reviewed: Nuclear Resonant Vibrational Spectroscopy (NRVS), which probes atomic dynamics, and Synchrotron Mössbauer Spectroscopy (SMS), which investigates the hyperfine interactions between electrons and nuclei. Additionally, the presentation will describe a new spectrometer currently under development that will enable SMS with a 1 µm focus for Fe-containing samples. We hope to see you there!
