We are eager to share our passion for this area of research, especially work with synchrotron-based methods, as we bring together an energetic and motivated community interested in using our collective geochemical knowledge to design use-inspired solutions to current environmental contamination issues. Please contact us with any questions, -Brandy, Sarick, and Case *11f - A Geochemical Perspective Toward Environmental Solutions* *Theme 11*: Environmental Geochemistry and Human Health *Keynote Speaker*: Tyler Sowers, US EPA *Description* Fundamental geochemical knowledge is often at the center of optimal design and implementation of soil and water remediation strategies. For example, in toxic metal(loid) clean-up via soil amendments, phytoremediation, or chemical injections to stimulate in-situ bioremediation of surface and groundwaters, molecular-scale understanding of underlying geochemical drivers has proven essential in successful remediation of a variety of contaminants across ecosystems. Recent advances in synchrotron-based X-ray characterization techniques and the growing use of genomic data have made it possible to identify complex molecular-scale pathways of contaminant geochemical cycling and ensuing bioavailability in the field. This multidisciplinary session aims to showcase environmental remediation projects that have benefited from geochemical approaches and understanding, with a particular emphasis on remediation of inorganic pollutants (e.g., Pb, Cd, Hg, N, P, U, As). We specifically encourage presentations that integrate molecular-scale data with macroscopic measurements to directly investigate the fate of metal(loid) and/or nutrient-derived contaminants at small or large-scale field sites. Laboratory investigations of polluted water or soils derived from contaminated field sites are also welcomed. Dear colleagues, there are less than two weeks left to submit your abstracts at the Goldschmidt Conference (August 18-23, Chicago, USA). Please consider submitting an abstract to the exciting session # 2b that we are organizing this year: 2b - Deep planetary interiors: new experimental and analytical approaches (https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://conf.goldschmidt.info/goldschmidt/2024/g… ) Experimental studies and theoretical simulations of material properties at extreme conditions are one of the few but prevailing ways that geoscientists use to understand and model the processes taking place in the most complex parts of the deep Earth and other planetary interiors. Yet more discoveries await in sight of recent technological advances in experimental designs and computing efficiency, sample preparation and synthesis methods, analytical tools as well as AI assisted data collection and processing protocols with supporting software. The science front is driven by the challenges that the high-pressure community faces in exploring the mineral physics and crystal chemistry of geomaterials at elevated pressure, temperature and stress conditions. In particular, the enhanced spatial and energy resolution of X-ray and optical techniques at large facilities and advanced laboratories encourage experiments at the ultimate instrumental limits. The resulted superior data quality derived grand access to an infinite number of mineral properties, and in combination with computational approaches, allow the full assessment of countless plausible scenarios that help describe the micro- and macroscopic processes that govern the deep planetary interiors. This session welcomes all contributions that highlight cutting-edge achievements in static and dynamic experimental methods as well as novel analytical approaches that address a variety of physical and chemical properties of minerals, and enhance our understanding of the evolution, structure and dynamics of the Earth’s interior and that of other planetary bodies. [Sees_users] SEES Update on APS-U and General User time for 2024-2

Dear SEES Users, As many of you know, the Advanced Photon Source (APS) is currently undergoing a major upgrade (APS-U) that will dramatically enhance the brightness and coherence of the X-ray source. This upgrade is well underway, with installation of the new storage ring complete. The APS expects to begin to storing electrons in the coming weeks. Work on the beamlines is progressing nicely, with installation and alignment of optics and endstation equipment also well underway. We look forward to commissioning upgraded SEES beamlines at APS Sectors 3, 6, 13, and 30 over the course of this spring and summer. Earlier today you likely received an email from the APS announcing a call for General User Proposals (GUPs) for a subset of beamlines for the 2024-2 run cycle this summer. Current projections indicate that most of the SEES beamlines (3, 6-BM, 13-BM-C, 13-ID) will still be engaged in commissioning activities during that time, with a planned return to General User Operations in the fall (2024-3). However, we hope that beamline 13-BM-D will be ready for a small number of user experiments in latter part of the summer, using the Tomography, Large Volume Press, Diamond Anvil Cell, and Brillouin Spectroscopy programs in that station. If you are interested in participating in these first experiments at 13-BM-D please submit a proposal through the new Universal Proposal System at https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://ups.servicenowservices.com/ups__;!!G_uCf… . The timeline for APS startup and commissioning activities is still fluid, so we'll be scheduling any 2024-2 experiments in 13-BM-D a few weeks in advance as we determine when the various techniques will come online. In addition to 13-BM-D, it is possible that as commissioning activities at the other SEES APS beamlines progress, we will be able to accept Rapid Access proposals for additional beamlines later in the summer. We are happy to announce that the 2024-B call for General User (GUP) and Collaborative Development (CD) proposals is now open. The beamtime for approved proposals is anticipated to be scheduled from July - November 2024. However short proof-of-principle proposals can be entertained, depending on beam and staff availability during beam commissioning days. As always, early contact with the instrument team is strongly encouraged when considering a proposal. We welcome long-term development ideas that are suitable for CD proposals. Yet more discoveries await in sight of recent technological advances in experimental designs and computing efficiency, sample preparation and synthesis methods, analytical tools as well as AI assisted data collection and processing protocols with supporting software. The science front is driven by the challenges that the high-pressure community faces in exploring the mineral physics and crystal chemistry of geomaterials at elevated pressure, temperature and stress conditions. In particular, the enhanced spatial and energy resolution of X-ray and optical techniques at large facilities and advanced laboratories encourage experiments at the ultimate instrumental limits. The resulted superior data quality derived grand access to an infinite number of mineral properties, and in combination with computational approaches, allow the full assessment of countless plausible scenarios that help describe the micro- and macroscopic processes that govern the deep planetary interiors. This session welcomes all contributions that highlight cutting-edge achievements in static and dynamic experimental methods as well as novel analytical approaches that address a variety of physical and chemical properties of minerals, and enhance our understanding of the evolution, structure and dynamics of the Earth’s interior and that of other planetary bodies. *Exploring Dynamic Properties of Earth and Planetary Materials Using Neutron and X-Ray Methods* Integration of beamline technologies and rock deformation experiments can facilitate the investigation of the feedback between evolving mechanical properties, deformation textures, and deformation mechanisms, leading to much more robust extrapolation of lab-based rheological models to Earth and other planets. The NSF-funded Research Coordination Network (RCN) “In Situ Studies of Rock Deformation” (ISRD) aims at developing novel methods that exploit the beamline capabilities, enabling the next generation of rock deformation experiments, wherein samples can be examined while they are deforming. The 4th ISRD-RCN workshop, hosted by *the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL)* and *the University of Grenoble Alpes* will take place in-person at ILL <https://www.thehotelumd.com/>/ESRF campus on May 21-23, 2024. X-ray Beamline Scientist Dynamic Compression Sector at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory We invite talented experimentalist to apply for the X-ray Beamline Scientist position at the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) - a first-of-its-kind capability dedicated to dynamic compression science that is operated by Washington State University (WSU). With a focus on x-ray diffraction and imaging measurements in materials subjected to dynamic compression, the DCS provides in-situ, time-resolved, measurements at microscopic length scales to achieve a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms governing a broad range of time-dependent, condensed matter phenomena (structural transformations, inelastic deformation and fracture, and chemical reactions) under dynamic loading. The successful candidate will operate and maintain x-ray and optical diagnostics, including state-of-the art x-ray optics and high-energy experimental equipment to support a broad range of user experiments and advance the DCS capabilities. Representative responsibilities include: * Support and maintain the DCS x-ray beamline components including vacuum systems, large Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) focusing mirror systems, and x-ray beam choppers and shutters. * Design and implement experimental components and custom control systems used on the x-ray beamline and in the experimental end stations with a focus on developing efficient automation, coding, and data acquisition/analysis software. * Initiate and participate in research activities including new types of x-ray measurements and analyses. * Interacting with users to conduct time-resolved dynamic compression experiments using x-ray techniques, such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), phase-contrast Imaging (PCI), and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). This includes setting up and characterizing the x-ray beam for users. * Contribute effectively to all aspects of the research projects including assistance to DCS users; maintenance of the experimental facilities; and working effectively in a team setting. * Independently define and complete experimental projects and tasks. This WSU position is located at Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, Illinois. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field with a strong experimental background in condensed physics. Dear Bob, Thank you for sending us the news. I’m very sorry to hear Yuriy Litvin passed away. Yuriy was very friendly, and I enjoyed to discuss with him on some topics on mantle mineralogy at several international conferences. In 2003, he came to my lab in Tokyo with his young colleague, Andrey Bobrov, to discuss our collaboration. Later, Andrey stayed in my lab for six months to conduct multi-anvil experiments on Na-bearing majorite garnet, and our joint work was published in GCA, 2008. May his soul rest in peace.
