Session Description: Characterization of critical minerals determines the feasibility of extraction and recovery and at the same time addresses environmental concerns. This session seeks contributions on the occurrence, distribution, and enrichment mechanisms of critical minerals. Studies that explore analytical methods for mineral prospecting, geochemical behavior, and green mining are welcome. The project will focus on the high-pressure-temperature structure and phase stability of the iron-light element alloys, with applications to understanding the behavior of materials under extreme conditions and their implications for the interiors of terrestrial planets. The project will involve using high-powered lasers to dynamically compress materials to the extreme pressure and temperature conditions of planetary cores, collecting diffraction and laser interferometry data. These data will then be applied to develop equations of state of iron alloys, mass-radius relationships, and predictions for dynamo magnetic fields at the conditions expected for super-Earths. The candidate will design and conduct experiments at National User Facilities, analyze experimental data, and incorporate the resulting data into planetary interior structure models. The fellow will work with Carnegie Staff Scientists Sally Tracy and Peter Driscoll. Additional Information: The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of an additional year pending progress and availability of funds. This prestigious fellowship offers a four-year tenure, with applications due by October 4th of this year. There are 20+ eligible institutions and 8 fellowships are offered each year.
