Assistant Beamline Scientist – Diffraction/Imaging/Microscopy at high pressure-temperature-strain rate conditions at HPCAT (RD2/RD3). The High-Pressure Collaborative Access Team (HPCAT) located at sector 16 of the Advanced Photon Source is currently seeking a beamline scientist to provide support for conducting research at extreme pressure-temperature conditions. The primary focus of this role will be to advance the applications of cutting edge, synchrotron-based, static, and time-resolved, high P-T research and enable transformational scientific discoveries in material science, physics, and chemistry. We are seeking a candidate with expertise in laser heating systems, but candidates with broader qualifications/background will be also considered. Earth Surface Processes and Global Change: Seeking candidates providing fundamental constraints on Earth's environmental evolution via the geologic record-broadly defined to include rocks, ice, soils, and sediments on multiple timescales. This includes, but is not limited to, cryospheric, paleontological, oceanographic, geochemical, or climate evolution. Candidates will be expected to teach courses related to environmental processes and evolution from the geologic record. 2. Earth Materials and Resources: Seeking candidates studying earth materials, or earth processes related to geologic resources. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, properties of earth materials, ores and critical minerals, or geology-based energy transition solutions. Candidates will be expected to teach courses related to earth materials, geologic processes, and natural resources. For both positions, preference will be given to candidates whose observationally grounded research employs cutting-edge or novel approaches, and may include experimental, analytical, remote sensing, or computational methods. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in geological or earth and environmental sciences, or a related field, with publications relevant to the position of interest. Post-doctoral and applicable teaching experience are desired. Postdoc Fellow Position in Mineral Physics and Planetary Science at Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, The University of Texas at Austin The postdoc fellow will investigate thermal transport properties of candidate Martian mantle minerals and core alloys at relevant high pressure and temperature conditions to provide physical database and modelling constraints on dynamic processes across the core-mantle boundary region. The fellow will conduct high pressure-temperature diamond anvil cell experiments coupled with time-resolved laser pump-and-probe spectroscopies to measure thermal conductivity and four-probe van der Pauw method to determine electrical conductivity of candidate Martian mantle and core materials. Neutron Scattering Division Oak Ridge National Laboratory High Pressure Neutron Instrument Scientist Date: Sep 8, 2023 Requisition Id 11581 Overview: We are seeking a Neutron Instrument Scientist for SNAP, the high-pressure diffractometer at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in the Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). SNAP is a high flux time-of-flight diffractometer able to collect of data on both on poly and single crystal samples as well as liquid and amorphous systems and being compatible with a variety of pressure devices. It is a leading instrument in its area playing a key role in the development of new, record-breaking, diamond anvil pressure cells (DACs). The instrument supports a diverse international science community, attracting scientists who carry out world-class research in physical, chemical and materials sciences. More details about the instrument and its science impact can be found at the SNAP webpage. As a core instrument team member, you will develop an impactful scientific portfolio at the beamline, focused on high pressure neutron scattering, while also champion developments in high pressure technology, sample environment, and software to help maintain and further improve the performance of the instrument and expand the user base! A key component of your role is to ensure safe operation and user support of the beamlines, which includes user assistance as local contact, helping with experimental setup, data acquisition and data analysis. You will have the opportunity to work with users on a wide range of science topics covered by the instrument. We expect you to pursue your own research program focusing the neutron scattering capabilities available at the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), existing offline high pressure capabilities (for example high pressure Raman scattering) and taking advantage of the world-class resources ORNL has to offer. Major Duties/Responsibilities: * Serve user groups as a local contact, assisting in experiment design and setup, user training and data acquisition. Ensure users are provided scientifically robust and appropriately reduced neutron datasets. This may involve participation, and co-authorship as appropriate, in user-based manuscript preparation. * Pursue a high-quality personal research program using SNAP and the existing suite of neutron diffractometers. * Grow a network of national and international collaborations, present your work and the capabilities of the beamline in major scientific conferences and publish research results in leading scientific journals. * Attract a scientifically impactful and diverse community of Users to fully apply the unique capabilities afforded by the SNAP beamline. * Champion developments in instrumentation, sample environment and software to help maintain and further develop the performance of SNAP. * Foster the development of the next generation of expert neutron users, via participation in workshops, and mentoring students and postdocs. * Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements, and foster an inclusive work environment for ORNL's diverse community of users, staff, postdocs, and students. * As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. [Sees_users] Announcing SEES: Synchrotron Earth and Environmental Science

Today is the start date for SEES: Synchrotron Earth and Environmental Science. SEES has a new cooperative agreement with NSF to manage and enhance NSF EAR-supported beamline operations at four DOE synchrotron facilities: the Advanced Photon Source (APS), the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL). Importantly, SEES will continue operation of GSECARS and the former COMPRES beamlines that the Earth and environmental science community has relied on for more than two decades, which revolutionized the study of physical and chemical properties of Earth materials and associated natural processes. Additionally, this portfolio of beamlines will be augmented by new SEES support for synchrotron applications in environmental science, low temperature geochemistry, and rock deformation studies across the DOE facilities. Details of each of these new operations will be announced as they ramp up in the coming months. The planning and preparation for SEES benefited from selfless contributions from many in the Earth and environmental community, and we owe them many thanks for the effort they invested. This includes the Synchrotron Geoscience Steering Committee, who led the community-based development of the SEES proposal; the beamline scientists and staff at COMPRES and GSECARS; and many others in the synchrotron geoscience user community, who provided input into the priorities and scientific vision for the SEES organization. We look forward to working with the user community to continue providing the resources needed for leading Earth and environmental research, as well as development of the scientific workforce.
