But traditional mining technology can be highly environmentally damaging. This means that the supply chains for many critical metals and semiconductors stretch through unstable parts of the world, leaving them vulnerable to disruption and exploitation. Biomining with Acidithiobacillus species already supplies about 20% of the world’s copper and 5% of its gold through an iron-specific redox process. However, there are no industrially-used microbes for any of the 30 or 40 other critical elements. This means that we will need to build microbes to enable bioprocesses to mine these elements with synthetic biology. However, we do not understand the basic science of how microbes interact with metals and minerals sufficiently to guide this engineering. My lab has characterized the genome of the mineral-dissolving microbe Gluconobacter oxydans and discovered the genetic systems that enable it to mine rare earth elements. We have used this new knowledge to create a roadmap for engineering G. oxydans that has already improved biomining of REE by up to 1,200%. Furthermore, we engineered the hyper-engineerable microbe Vibrio natriegens to separate adjacent heavy lanthanides, leap-frogging solvent extractions. However, this still leaves over 20 other critical elements that we need build microbes for. To build the basic knowledge for this, my lab has started the Microbe-Mineral Atlas to catalog metal and mineral-interacting microbes from around the US, and hopefully the world. ALS-U schedule impact on SEES users

Dear SEES community, SEES supports a variety of synchrotron X-ray applications at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) to support geoscience research, including: – In situ X-ray diffraction studies at high pressure and/or temperature for deep Earth and planetary studies; – Scanning transmission soft X-ray microscopy (STXM) and ptychography for low temperature geochemistry / environmental research; – New support for tomographic studies, including rock deformation applications. The ALS has recently announced its expected schedule<https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://mailchi.mp/newsletter/2025-10-alsu-updat… > leading into a dark period for the ALS-U upgrade. ALS expects to host users in the 2026-1 cycle (February 2 – July 2), have a period with no user operations in 2026-2, return to user operations in the 2027-1 cycle, and then shut down for 2 years or more, beginning possibly as soon as May 2027. SEES encourages interested users to be aware of this schedule and to continue seeking experiment time at SEES-supported facilities at ALS during the 2026-1 and 2027-1 active user cycles, before the extended dark period begins. For these two cycles, beamtime requests on existing proposals are being honored but no new General User proposals will be accepted. The goal is to help participants incorporate synchrotron X-ray methods into their research toolkit to study the physical and chemical properties of bioenvironmental systems, including plants, soils, and microbes. Additionally, the postdoctoral fellow will teach a reduced course load as the instructor of record. This unique hybrid position provides an opportunity to gain teaching experience and explore the unique opportunities of working in a liberal arts college while enabling the fellow to maintain the research productivity necessary to stay competitive across the job market. This position has been funded by the NSF for 2 years. *Position Overview:* The postdoctoral fellow will participate in experimental and computational high-pressure research efforts commensurate with their experience, including high-pressure diamond anvil cell experiments (X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy) and ab initio calculations using Quantum ESPRESSO, with the expectation of contributing to peer-reviewed publications. The postdoctoral fellow will be financially supported to present their work at national scientific conferences. National Postdoc Appreciation Week: Meet Our SEES Postdocs

Celebrating Our SEES Postdocs Happy National Postdoc Appreciation Week! We’re proud to highlight our postdocs and share a glimpse of the people behind the research. Learn more about each of them below. [Dr. Qi Chen] Dr. Qi Chen Advanced Photon Source - Argonne National Laboratory Mentor: Dr. Yanbin Wang (GSECARS) Research Focus: I study the chemical and physical properties of aqueous fluids and silicate melts at depth—and how these processes concentrate metals into mineral deposits. Method-wise, I integrate high-pressure/temperature experimental petrology with isotope geochemistry, in-situ synchrotron X-ray techniques, and ex-situ chemical analyses. I’m especially interested in how volatiles and noble gases behave in the deep Earth. Right now I’m developing in-situ falling-sphere measurements to track the viscosity of fluids and melts directly under crust-mantle relevant conditions. What excites me is turning our measurements into constraints that actually move geodynamic and ore-forming models forward. Highlight: I built an in-situ viscosity–structure pipeline across complementary systems. For aqueous fluids, I used a hydrothermal diamond anvil cell (HDAC) to measure viscosity and collect spectroscopic constraints over oceanic-crust P–T conditions. For dry and hydrous silicate melts, I combined a multi-anvil press with synchrotron X-ray diagnostics and in-situ falling-sphere tracking: (i) diopside compositions at mantle pressures and temperatures, and (ii) an andesite project spanning crustal–upper-mantle conditions. Together, these datasets sharpen constraints on volatile transport and melt mobility at depth. Outside the Lab: Trail running [Dr. Edwin Rivas Meraz] Dr. Edwin Rivas Meraz University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Advanced Light Source - Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Mentors: Dr. Brandy Toner (UMN) and Dr. David Shapiro (ALS-LBL) Research Focus: My research investigates how iron sulfide mineral oxidation in Prairie Pothole Region pond sediments interacts with natural organic matter to generate greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Highlight: I had the opportunity to travel and share my research July 2025 at the Goldschmidt International Geochemistry Conference in Prague, Czechia. I was able to meet and connect with geochemists from around the world and learn about research that is going on at the forefront of our field. Outside the Lab: While I very much enjoy traveling to different cities and countries or hiking as time (and budget) allows, a lot of my time outside of the lab is spent cooking or baking something I find online and suddenly start craving. [Dr. Maksim Yakovlev] Dr. Maksim Yakovlev Advanced Photon Source - Argonne National Laboratory Mentor: Dr. Mark Rivers (GSECARS) Research Focus: I use synchrotron micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to generate 3D datasets of geological samples under extreme pressures and temperatures. By correcting motion artifacts, my work makes it possible to better visualize and analyze processes related to magma formation and evolution. I also develop semi-automated segmentation pipelines based on random forest classifier machine learning models for complex geological micro-CT images, allowing easier visualization and quantitative analysis of datasets that are challenging to analyze manually. Other user support I perform includes design and integration of various components for triaxial cells and the micro-CT apparatus, as well as providing instruction and assistance for user groups coming to GSECARS to acquire micro-CT data. Highlight: When my motion artifact correction pipeline was applied to high pressure and temperature micro-CT scans taken at GSECARS for the study of degassing in magma forming processes, we were able to resolve features that were previously unseen due to the amount of unintended motion in the system during scans. Although GSECARS and the user group had already seen volumes within the images that appeared to be the gas bubbles of interest, the newly observed features were less absorbing than the volumes originally investigated, indicating that these new features were actually most likely to be gas. This finding has shifted the volumetric analysis to these new gas volumes, which, as expected, increase in number and volume as pressure is taken off the system. Outside the Lab: I enjoy many things, but some of my favorites are running, reading medieval Norse literature, lifting weights, hiking, archery, brewing mead, and rock climbing. [Dr. Bin Zhao] Dr. Bin Zhao Advanced Photon Source - Argonne National Laboratory Mentor: Dr. Dongzhou Zhang (GSECARS) Research Focus: My research focuses on the physical properties of minerals, such as structure, phase transition, and electrical conductivity. With these properties, we can better understand how the Earth has evolved so far, and what is happening in the deep interior. Highlight: At GSECARS, we successfully determined Si isotope fractionation among mantle minerals and used the results to discuss the source of natural ocean island basalts that contain isotropically lighter Si. The position will work closely with the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL, a Directorate of SLAC, and a national research facility for scientific applications in synchrotron radiation) with the goal of enhancing support and increase scientific throughput for synchrotron users through partnership with the NSF funded SEES (Synchrotron Earth and Environmental Science) Program. SEES will develop, manage, operate, and support user access to U.S. synchrotron-based experimental and analytical capabilities necessary to advance Earth and environmental sciences. SEES will enable cutting-edge research and train the next generation of scientists with a focus on generating new understanding of the Earth System and environmental material properties, processes, and behavior under the full range of conditions found on and within the Earth, from the atmosphere to the deepest interior. SEES will provide expanded access and support for the Earth and environmental science community at beamlines across the DOE User Facility Complex. SEES will place emphasis on collaborating with and expanding the Earth system and environmental science synchrotron community. It will also conduct a significant portfolio of education and outreach activities, working collaboratively with education and outreach programs at synchrotron light sources. The successful candidate will possess strong methodological, scientific, and technical skills in micro-x-ray fluorescence imaging (•-XRF) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Stanford-SEES program seeks to sustain and enhance the general user program through excellent support, training, and dissemination. The Stanford Earth System Scientist Research Scientist will work substantially at SSRL/SLAC and will provide beginning to end support for the Earth system and environmental sciences users at the high demand beam line operations of XAS and •-XRF Imaging. This beginning to end support will entail working with NSF-funded geoscience users throughout their entire synchrotron experience, including the crafting and submission of beamtime proposals, experimental and data collection assistance, data processing and analysis, and publication of results. •-XRF facilities at SSRL include a number of beam lines that enable research in wide number of research areas, with a particular focus on geological, environmental, chemical, and materials sciences. The beamlines together support a wide range of overlapping spatial and energy resolutions and necessitate a highly varied approach to instrumentation, sample environment, data acquisition, and analysis. The beam line facilities are made available to a national and international scientific user community, with SSRL staff providing scientific and technical support in their use. The activities within this opening will be dedicated towards enhancing the scientific user community whose research is closely aligned with the Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) within NSF and will include technological and methodological development, user-engagement and support and training and dissemination. Your specific responsibilities include: * Work as part of the •-XRF/XAS team to provide specialized technical and methodological support for beamline developments and scientific user research. * Independently provide training and experiment support on the use of these beam lines, including instrumentation and software, for external scientific users. * Provide guidance to scientific users in designing optimized data collection during experiments, a significant part of which is expected to be managed through remote-access approaches. * Contribute to the definition, design, construction, and commissioning of in-hutch instrumentation, for example in-hutch optics systems; sample cells/environments ranging from cryogenic to high temperatures, and/or manipulation of complex bespoke chambers for anoxic, or controlled humidity environments. * Collaborate with other SEES staff at other supported facilities to maximize the user experience for all NSF-EAR users. * Work occasional evenings and weekends as part of the on-call user support program. * Other duties may also be assigned. * Develop a robust training and dissemination program that will lower the barrier to entry for synchrotron-based spectroscopy and imaging experiments for geological and environmental users. * Routinely develop and execute research projects with novice EAR-NSF researchers. To be successful in this position you will bring: * A Ph.D. in geological or environmental sciences with strong focus on synchrotron-based imaging and spectroscopy techniques. * Direct experience and knowledge of synchrotron radiation x-ray absorption spectroscopy beam lines. * At least 4 years of post-doctoral experience in development and/or application of synchrotron-based •-XRF and XAS to geological and environmental research. * Demonstrated excellence in teaching, training and dissemination and translational user-support activities at a synchrotron facility. * Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communications skills. * Demonstrated strong ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists, technical staff and user groups; to work well in a team; as well as ability to take individual independent initiative, all in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
