Dear colleagues, Are you fascinated by the deep interiors of planets or study minerals found hundreds to thousands of kilometers beneath our feet? Whether you work with experiments, computational models, or seismological data, if your research touches on the mantle or mantle phase transitions, this session is for you! Submit and abstract to: DI009. Mantle Phase Transitions and their Impact on Convection, Evolution, and Interior Structure In this session, we explore how phase transitions influence everything from mantle convection and slab behavior to the evolution and internal structure of terrestrial bodies. We’ll feature invited talks from experts across multiple disciplines (seismology, geodynamics, and mineral physics): * Jonathan Wolf – University of California, Berkeley * Ranpeng Li – GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and Kiel University * Jin Zhang – Texas A&M University We welcome contributions from all related fields. We especially encourage early-career researchers and students to present their new and exciting research! Session Abstract: Mineral phase transitions in the mantle impact the dynamics, evolution, and structure of planetary interiors. These transitions—governed by variations in pressure, temperature, and composition—can influence large-scale mantle convection, promote thermal and chemical stratification, and produce seismic discontinuities. However, understanding the dynamic impacts of mineral transitions remains challenging due to uncertainties in phase boundaries, the role of water and volatiles, variations in mineral assemblages, and their effects on physical properties such as rheology and thermal conductivity. These tools are transforming our understanding of physical and chemical processes across spatial and temporal scales, both on Earth and other planetary bodies.This session invites contributions across a broad spectrum of methods and applications, including but not limited to: data compilation and mining, statistical modeling, classical and deep learning, explainable AI, and generative models applied to geophysics, geodynamics, geochemistry, structural geology, volcanology, petrology, and mineral physics. Session Description: The distribution of life enabling elements (e.g., C, S, N, O, H) in terrestrial planets is shaped by how these volatiles were acquired and processed during planetary formation and evolution. Magmatic processes - including core formation, magma ocean degassing and crystallization, volcanic outgassing and subduction - play a central role in controlling the retention, mobility, and distribution of volatiles within planetary interiors. These magmatic processes are intricately linked to dynamic factors like magma ocean convection, crystallization kinetics, and the longevity of partially molten reservoirs. Understanding how this chemical-dynamical interplay influenced volatile element partitioning is key for reconstructing Earth’s path towards habitability. This session invites interdisciplinary contributions exploring these processes through cosmochemical analyses, experimental petrology, thermodynamic modeling, molecular and fluid dynamics, and smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations. Submissions leveraging machine learning or AI to advance these investigations are encouraged. Dear colleagues, We invite you to contribute abstracts to our interdisciplinary high-pressure science session at the 2025 AGU Fall Meeting: Synergizing Across Scales and Methods: Collaborative Advances in High-Pressure Earth and Planetary Science ( https://urldefense.us/v3/__https://agu.confex.com/agu/agu25/prelim.cgi/Sess… ). This session focuses on interdisciplinary studies that integrate multiple high-pressure techniques such as large-volume press, diamond anvil cell, shock compression, and computational methods like DFT and MD, to investigate the behavior of planetary materials under extreme conditions. We welcome abstracts that combine methodological integration and experimental or computational techniques, and offer new insights into how integrating these methods enhances our understanding of the structure, dynamics, and evolution of Earth and planetary interiors. Session description: Understanding the behavior of Earth and planetary materials under extreme conditions often requires more than a single method. Recent progress in various experimental methods, such as large-volume press, diamond anvil cell, and dynamic compression, have provided new opportunities to study how materials behave under high pressure and temperature. Modern density functional theory and molecular dynamics, enhanced by machine learning, now enable realistic length and time scale simulations of complex phenomena with quantum accuracy. Integrating static, dynamic, and computational methods provides a clearer understanding of phase changes, elastic properties, and transport behaviors of materials in the interiors of Earth and super-Earth exoplanets. This session invites contributions that combine different high-pressure experimental and computational methods, discuss challenges in these approaches, and demonstrate how multi-method studies advance research in mineral and rock physics for planetary interiors. It is characterized by extreme conditions and complex chemistry and dynamics. However, understanding the structure, composition, material properties, dynamical processes, and evolution of the core is crucial for insights into planet formation, geomagnetic field generation, habitability, and more.
