Dear Colleagues, the EGU abstracts submission is now open, in the last few years we have run the session /Earth's and planetary cores: structure, dynamics and evolution/ with great success. We would greatly appreciate your contribution for the EGU 2024. The abstract submission deadline is Wednesday, 10 January 2024, 13:00 CET. *EGU session: GD8.1/EMRP2.8/PS5.4 <https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU24/sessionprogramme/5233#>* Understanding the structures and dynamics of the core of a planet is essential to constructing a global geochemical and geodynamical model, and has implication on the planet's thermal, compositional and orbital evolution. Remote sensing of planetary interiors from space and ground based observations is entering a new era with perspectives in constraining their core structures and dynamics. Meanwhile, increasingly accurate seismic data provide unprecedented images of the Earth's deep interior. Unraveling planetary cores' structures and dynamics requires a synergy between many fields of expertise, such as mineral physics, geochemistry, seismology, fluid mechanics or geomagnetism. This session welcomes contributions from all the aforementioned disciplines following theoretical, numerical, observational or experimental approaches. Dear all, Thanks to everyone who attended today’s first SEES Webinar. For those who were unable to attend or who wish to relive it, a recording of the webinar will be available soon; instructions to access the recording will follow on this email list and on the SEES website <https://millenia.cars.aps.anl.gov/sees/>. As described in the webinar, nominations are needed for users to stand for election to the SEES User Group Executive Committee. The SEES User Group Executive Committee will serve as the voice of the SEES users, and have representation on the SEES Executive Committee for all major SEES planning. Please consider nominating yourself or a colleague to this role. Nominations can be made here <https://millenia.cars.aps.anl.gov/sees/user_community-ec_nominations/> on the SEES website. Additionally, we also welcome feedback on the provisional SEES User Group bylaws <https://millenia.cars.aps.anl.gov/sees/user_community-bylaws/> This is especially important as the organization is in the early stages of rolling out. These bylaws outline the role of the User Group and the structure with which it operates. Thank you for your input. Hello High Pressure Community: Registration for the FORCE 2024 Winter Workshop is now open: https://bit.ly/FORCEww24reg The Workshop will be held Jan. 3–4, 2024 at Arizona State University, with support from Corning and Advanced Diamond Products. Info and deadlines below! Please pass on this email to anyone who might be interested in this event. • The Workshop will begin 8–9 am Jan. 3 and will adjourn by 4 pm on Jan. 4th. • Hotel info is being finalized and will be sent at a later date • Invited talks (confirmed thus far) • Dr. Tetsuo Irifune, Director of the Geodynamics Research Center and Distinguished Professor, Ehime University, Japan • Dr. Irifune is a mineral physicist and deep Earth petrologist who uses large volume press to study characteristics of the mantle and has greatly advanced the field with such innovations as the development of superhard nano-polycrystalline diamonds. Dr. Irifune’s lab is home to Botchan, Ichiban’s big brother. • Dr. Megumi Kawasaki, Associate Professor, Oregon State University, USA • Dr. Kawasaki is a materials scientist who studies severe plastic deformation using the high pressure torsion press (Twister). • Dr. Carl Agee, Former President of COMPRES, Director of the Institute of Meteoritics and Professor, University of New Mexico • Poster session: some abstracts will be elevated to talks if the schedule allows. • Dec. 1, midnight MST: deadline to submit an abstract and be considered for a talk (you must also be registered to be considered for a talk) • A link to the abstract submission form will be included in your registration confirmation email • We are able to offer two student poster awards of $250 each. *Caltech Seismological Laboratory Director’s Postdoctoral Scholar * https://www.gps.caltech.edu/about/positions-available/postdoctoral-position… The Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites applications for the Seismological Laboratory Director’s Postdoctoral Scholar position. We invite applications for a post doctoral position in any research area covered by the Seismological Laboratory, including, but not limited to: Observational seismology, earth structure, earthquake physics, earthquake early warning, computational geophysics, mineral physics, geodesy, geodynamics, and tectonics. We are especially interested in individuals whose research naturally links with any of the research programs within the Seismo Lab, GPS Division, or other parts of Caltech. A Ph.D. is required and initial appointment will be for one year. Starting date is flexible. Applicants should send a CV, a brief statement of research interests and experience, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent electronically to Jennifer Shechet at shechet(a)caltech.edu. All applications and references are due by Friday, December 1, 2023. Fellowship candidates will automatically be considered for other available postdoctoral positions at Caltech in geophysics.
