Noise Generation in FEFFIT
Dear Friends, I am still going with the chi^2-scan business and need a fast way to modulate white noise on a spectrum for some proof of principle. Has anyone a good idea how to do this (or would it be even possible in ifeffit)? Thanx for helping Cheers, Norbert -- Dr. rer. nat. I just thought I would add that on Mac OS X, I have been using (what was the latest) Tk with no apparent problems (e.g. artemis works and there are no fbox problems).
Hi Paul, I keep hoping to get a working Mac OS 10.3 installer working for ifeffit+. I believe I'm very close: I have PackageManager and AppleScript mostly tamed, but still have a few bugs with permissions in the install process. I don't really understand all this stuff, and don't have lots of time to work on it, but it's close! I've been basing what I have on Tk-804_025.beta6, which seems to work for me, though I have tested artemis extensively (I'm still trying to figure out how it works!!). And I'm relying on the System supplied version of Perl. So is Tk....beta10 signficantly better than beta6 for athena/artemis with Perl5.8.0? If so, do I need to apply the 'HList patch' or just build it from source? Thanks, --Matt

This is not currently available in ifeffit/feffit. It would be possible, even "not hard", and is probably worthwhile. I have some relatively old code (written with help from Boyan Boyanov) that I use to make fake noise. The fortran, with a linux-y Makefile is at http://cars9.uchicago.edu/ifeffit/contrib/Noise/noise_calc.tar.gz This program prompts for a 2-column ASCII file, asks how big sigma should be, and writes out a file with that amount of noise added to the spectra. That's about the extent of the documentation!!! Is this close to what you had in mind?? --Matt
