Hi, Bruce
For the first question, after I answered 'yes'. Artemis will run well
without problems. But after running fits for four (sometimes even three)
times, it will crash again. And the next cycle begins.
As for reproducible, only after I finished the updates, it will crash every
four or three fits, no matter what fits I am running. The fits paths
included might be around 100.
By the way, I did not notice if Artemis posts a message or not before. But
this time, it do pop up a message at the first time I run the fit (not at
the time it crashes). This is the message I got: # This file created at
11:01:54 on 27 April, 2004
# using Windows XP, perl 5.006001, Tk 800.024, and Ifeffit 1.2.5
The following message was trapped by Artemis on a SIGWARN:

I began to use the old version of Artemis in last September, and did not update till days ago. But after the installation, Artemis crashed very often. After running four fits, it will crash without any reasons (I did not close the graphics window). And when I restart the Artemis, sometimes it will give out information like: 'There seems to be a large number of abandoned project folders. This might be due to past program crashes or other past problems. I can clean these up at this time.' I am not sure if it happens to others. I work in Windows XP platform.
You seem to be reporting two different problems here, but have not given me enough information to do anything useful about either one. 1. What happens when you answer yes to the question about cleaning up abandoned project folders? Does Artemis crash again right after that? How about the next time you start Artemis? 2. It is really not adequate just to say "Artemis crashed very often." If you do not give me enough information to reproduce the problem myself, then I cannot fix whatever is causing the crash. Indeed, I cannot even begin to search for the problem because you haven't told me anything about it. Please read this page carefully: http://leonardo.phys.washington.edu/~ravel/software/exafs/bugs.html and the consider trying your bug report again. If Artemis beeps and posts a message to the echo area about a TRAP file, please send me the specified file along with a description of how you got to the situation. The information you sent me suggests a problem in trying to handle text that uses non-ascii characters. Unfortunately the trap file artemis generated does not give me enough information to make a good guess as to the problem, but I have a guess. Are you using non-ascii characters (which is almost, but not quite, the same thing as characters that are not found on a normal english keyboard) in any of your data files, your feff or atoms input files, in any of your parameters, in the project journal, or on the properties page? This is the kind of thing that would happen if a non-native english speaker wanted to use text in his or her own language in one of the places I asked about. If the text you use does not have an ascii representation and requires use of unicode, that might make trouble for Artemis. It is surely a reasonable thing to want to make notes in a data file header or artemis' journal using one's own language. Indeed, that is so important that I should make sure that Artemis allows that. Of course, that might not be the problem at all. Has anyone else seen this problem? Aria, can you send me a project file that will demonstrate this problem along with explicit instructions for how to make it happen? Hi Bruce, This is very reminiscent of problems I and my students have been having, but I have not had time to try to track down the reproducibility and behavior, and figured sending you a message "Artemis crashes a lot" was not terribly helpful. Based on your preliminary diagnosis, I do, however, have a thought. Are control characters non-Ascii for this purpose? Because I probably have "ctrl-s" scattered all over the place. That happens because within the journal ctrl-s does not save, but rather tries to enter that character into the journal, leading to a little box. Likewise, I used to get that behavior when I was in certain places on the GDS screen, although I can't seem to get that to happen now--maybe the new version fixed that somehow? But the journal does still have that behavior. I'm using Windows XP and Artemis 0.7.003. --Scott Calvin Sarah Lawrence College

Thanks, Scott. That gives me something to look for. A question for Scott and Aria, is this problem correlated either with reading the built-in documentation or writing a report in the form of an excel spreadsheet? Hi Bruce, I don't check the built-in documentation very often, and was not even aware a report in the form of a spreadsheet was possible. I guess if I read the documentation, I might know more about the capabilities! :) At any rate, I don't think either of those contribute to the problem in my case. --Scott

Actually I had a brain fart. *Athena* has built in documentation and spreadsheet reports -- not Artemis. The original question was about Artemis, not Athena. I should never rely upon my brain to o my thinking for me.
