Installation of the last versions on XP
Hi everybody, Perhaps you may hep to resolve the following problem: I have no problems in installing and working with Ifeffit-1.2.6 on my Windows XP laptops. The problem concerns working with later versions: 1.2.9 and 1.2.10. There are no error messages on installation, but neither Athena not Artemis work. What can I change in setup? Thanks in advance, A.Shiryaev

Hi, We'll need a bit of information. Please do the following: * open the command prompt and cd to C:\Program Files\Ifeffit\bin * type athena (or artemis -- I suspect whatever the problem is, it is the same for both) and hit carriage return * tell us about any error messages that get written to the screen Hopefully, that'll give us some hints about the problem. Hi everybody,
I am have the same problem that Shiryaev reported but only with the version
1.2.10. The message that write both when click in Athena and Artemis located
in the folder bin ( way sugested by Bruce) is:
can´t open \share\per1\Xray\space_groups.db: No such file or directory at
/Per1App/Xray/Xtal.pm line 116
BEGIN failed --compilation aborted at /Per1App/ifeffit/Files.pm line 50.
BEGIN failed --compilation aborted at athena line 97.
I hope that in helpfull.

Hi, Clicking on athena.exe or artemis.exe will (normally) not work because the environment is not set correctly. The messages you're seeing (can't find perl modules) is a sympton of that.
From the Command prompt, try this: C:\> cd C:\Program Files\Ifeffit\bin C:\> runner athena
The 'runner' program sets up the environment and launches the program
for you. This is what the Desktop and Start Menu icons do.
Anyway, the output from "runner athena" will probably be most helpful
in figuring out what is going on.

Hi Bruce et al., I've encountered a bug in Athena, at least on my platform. I'm using a plain vanilla Athena 0.8.054 with ifeffit 1.2.10 under Mac OS 10.5.4. When I do a linear combination fit on chi(k) and one of the standards has data that does not extend to as high k as the group being fit (or maybe it's when the standards don't extend to equally high k), Athena does properly perform the fit as judged by numbers appearing in the "weight" windows, but when it tries to plot to Aquaterm only the data appears. Before it manages to plot the fit Athena hangs and has to be restarted. This is the case even when the k-range being fit is shorter than the k-range of the shortest standard. Fitting norm(E) does not give this behavior. The workaround for now is clear: truncate all my groups to be equal length (hmm...that should change the background a little, though). Since I'm at home today, I don't know if this is a Mac only problem or if it also occurs on other platforms. I've attached a simple file that demonstrates this behavior. Go to linear combination fitting with the first group highlighted, and click "fit this group" to get the crash. --Scott Calvin Sarah Lawrence College

Hi Kleper,
That's hard for me to read, but it seems to say (I'm copying this by
eye from the image you posted):
...
Your version of IFEFFIT is up to date!
Couldn't read bitmap file "C:\......\Temp\pdk-Familia
Rocha-1604\Tk/arraowdownwin.xbm": no such file or directory. ......
Except that "pdk-Familia Rocha-1604" contains some odd-looking
non-ASCII characters.
Athena.exe unpacks a bunch of perl-needed files into temporary files
named 'pdk-USERNAME-number' under a Temporary directory, and then need
to be able to read these files.
Which leads to my guess as to the problem: that it's an issue with
perlApp not being able to read files/directories with unicode in their
name. I don't know what will and won't work here (and, really my
sincere apologize for being ASCII-centrric), but we've seen that
before. Any chance of testing this with a different user account?
There might be a way around this from our end (that is perlApp seems
to use the system defined Temporary Directory and Username to make the
temporary location for unpacking: perhaps Bruce and I can check for
and avoid such trouble??? ), but I wouldn't hold your breath.
Also, in the future, could you please post error messages in text, not
as a bitmap, and not as a screenshot of the entire window? From the
command prompt, you can mark and copy text, then paste into notepad
and save as plain text. Really, this is way better for all of us.
Hope that helps,
