[Fwd: Re: Mac intel OSX - Feff6 whereabouts]
I can't say I have had this problem with either of my Intel Macs, but I do know a solution that seems to have worked for others... that is to delete the preferences file for artemis which is located in your home directory under ".horae" and is named "artemisrc". Note that the "." (dot) in the directory name. This causes the finder and the default unix file listing "ls" command to not output the name as such
delete the preference file you should run the command "rm ~/.horae/ artemisrc". This hopefully will help things... Paul On Jul 16, 2007, at 2:46 AM, Katy Evans wrote:
Hi,
Apologies if this question has a very simple answer but I can't work it out. I installed the iXAFS package onto my new Mac (OSX 10.4.8) and almost everything works very well and it is very pleasant to use so thankyou.
BUT Feff6 won't run.
I can fit to existing Feff calculations but I can't make new ones, from .inp files that used to work on my other computer, or from quick first shell calculations.
The message from Artemis starts 'This error is probably due to having Artemis configured incorrectly and so it does not know how to run Feff on your computer...' and goes on to say that I should check the value of the Feff executable in Preferences, and set it to Feff6. So I checked it and it was indeed Feff6.
I looked for Feff6 on my computer and could only find a Feff6.atp file in the Perl directory (/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread- multi-2level/Xray/atp) - should there be anything else? I tried typing this address into the box for the Feff executable option but
I tried to remove everything and reinstall from the disk image but I

Thanks for the advice, but sadly it didn't work. I also tried deleting
the whole .horae and Perl folders and then reinstalling iXAFS, but that
didn't help either. I checked the artermisrc file and it does say feff6
in the correct place, it just doesn't seem to be able to find feff6.
Any more tips? Cheers, Katy

Katy, The only other thing that I can think of is that there were two versions released, one with and one without feff6. Make sure that you have the latest version. http://mrcat.iit.edu/iXAFSinstall.tar.gz Jeff On Jul 16, 2007, at 9:09 PM, Katie Evans wrote:

I ran into this problem about two weeks ago. I have no idea why, it had worked fine for a few months before that. Paul's suggestion worked for me.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for building the Intel Mac installer. I'd tried it today on an Intel Mac today. This seems a little odd, but I had to copy libraries like libifcore.dylib from /Applications/iXAFS.app/ to /Applications/Ifeffit/lib I also had to move the executables to /Applications/Ifeffit/bin But then it did work -- OK, I haven't tried running feff6 but I'll trust you and Katie for now, and probably find out soon enough.... I'm perfectly willing to believe we did something wrong on install. Any ideas what we did wrong? Thanks, --Matt
Hi Matt, That would be strange, if you had to move the libraries. I hadn't heard of this problem before. It should look in /Applications/iXAFS.app/executables or / Applications/iXAFS.app/libraries for the associated files. I don't have an /Applications/Ifeffit/lib library at all on my machine. I wonder if there are some default paths that are being searched first or taking over. We are working on a universal binary of the whole thing at the moment. Hopefully, we will finish soon, but we will look into this for the next release. These are the hard problems to track down due to machine uniqueness. Hi Jeff, Is the idea to run from /Applications/iXAFS.app, not /Applications/Ifeffit ? Or is iXAFS.app an application that runs to choose between Ifeffit (and other?) XAFS Apps? I was simply trying to get to a point of being able to run the Athena application from /Applications/Ifeffit/Athena.app. Maybe I completely misunderstood what this installer does? Anyway, thanks again -- it worked!! --Matt
Hi Matt, The idea is to have everything self-contained in as few places as possible. iXAFS.app contains almost everything necessary to run all of the unixy apps. The idea is to run from /Applications/iXAFS.app and not from / Applications/ifeffit. My take on it that having an /Applications/ifeffit clutters up the Applications folder with little benefit. All of the command line programs can be run from within the .app structure anyway. I wanted to avoid an /Applications/ifeffit for the above reason. Glad that it worked though.
