Demeter OS X plot button colors in Athena
Hi Bruce, We are seeing an issue in Athena where the plot buttons are not colored correctly. According to section 2.1 of the Athena Users’s Guide, the top row of plot buttons highlighted in the image should be the same color (purple) as the plotting option widgets below them. The 2nd row of plot buttons should be yellowish. However on OS X, all plot buttons appear uncolored. By far the best way to illustrate this is with a screenshot of the Athena UI. I hope the attached image is clear enough to show the issue. I am running Demeter version 0.9.20pre10 via Macports demeter-devel on OS X 10.9.4. BTW, I am happy to work with you on other OS X issues but I am not actually a demeter user and I don’t have much data myself. But if you send me some data, I can follow steps to try to reproduce issues. [cid:F140B9BC-1ABC-4ACE-B222-A833F804F78B] Cheers! Frank
Frank,
There is a faint yellow color around the buttons you circled (Demeter
version 0.9.20pre10 via Macports demeter-devel on OS X 10.9.4) and the
second row of buttons has a faint purple color around them. These colors
are consistent with the colors of the left/right columns of display options
below. The top buttons are for the left yellow list and the bottom buttons
(purple) are for the purple highlighted list.

Hi Frank,
The suggestion you made allowed me to successfully get artemis, athena, and hephestus running with one problem. The windows are black for artemis (although the other two are fine). Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for responding Bruce. You are correct and this is a new bug I have seen recently. While I don’t know why this is happening exactly, fortunately the workaround is easy.
sudo port install ifeffit +gcc49 sudo port clean p5.16-ifeffit sudo port upgrade outdated

Hi (again) Frank,
The problem with the black windows in artemis was solved last time by installing the demeter-devel package, however, you suggested installing the ifeffit package. I had assumed that this version would have solved the black window problem. I then tried installing demeter-devel and all programs ran without error. I am a little confused as to what is the most recent version -- am I now running an older version of demeter than before? Is this black window problem something wrong on my end (with the version installed by port install ifeffit +gcc49)? In any case, thank you very much for your efforts.
Best wishes,
Paul

Hi Bruce,
Thank you for the suggestion. I would have tried addressing this directly, but the macports is supposed to handle dependencies automatically (like yum or yast in linux). The suggestion by Frank apparently solved the installation problem, but there is a potential "black window" problem in artemis. I can avoid this by using the package demeter-devel, but it was my impression that the package ifeffit was the most recent version. Hope I figure this out soon.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,
demeter-devel is the most current version of Demeter available via
Macports--you can always check by checking the port documentation itself.
Since Demeter is a front-end to ifeffit, the black windows have to do with
how Demeter renders on Macs and nothing to do with how up-to-date ifeffit
is (as far as I know). Ifeffit was the dependency (of demeter) with the
problem when called automatically by Macports, but updating that manually
won't also update your demeter front-end. If you have the most recent
ifeffit (now that you've updated it manually) and demeter-devel you should
have the most updated version of everything.
Best,
Alison

Alison is exactly correct. You now have the latest of everything and demeter-devel has the fixes for the black window problem.
Cheers!

We are seeing an issue in Athena where the plot buttons are not colored correctly.
Hi Frank, I had thought you and I had already discussed this issue. Maybe it was all in my head! The buttons do not get colored correctly on the Mac. As Jennifer pointed out, there is a feint glow around the two button rows, but it is hardly obvious. As she says, top row of buttons --> left column of controls & bottom row --> right column. One of these days, I'll get an opportunity to sit down with a Mac and play around with the button colors. Since this does not happen on either linux or Windows, i am at a bit of a loss for how to troubleshoot. To be honest, it's astonishing to me that my software works on the Mac without my ever having tried it myself. Wx really has solved the cross-platform problem quite well.
