Greetings everybody, I'm another newcomer to the EXAFS world whose life was made much easier thanks to this wonderful software package. My sincere thanks to Matt, Bruce and everyone else involved in the "Ifeffit family" project. But, although the software is very nice, I'm having some trouble installing the newest version (1.2.8). I've been trying to install the Ifeffit 1.2.8 package on my WinXP, but there seems to be a problem with the files. I've downloaded the installers from both sourceforge and cars.uchicago.edu, but whenever I try to run any of them I get the following message: "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program." So, I'd like to ask if anyone from the mailing list managed to install Ifeffit 1.2.8 on WinXP or if anyone got the same kind of error message when trying to install. Thanks, Leandro

Leandro, I have downloaded and installed the current installer on 2 windows machines -- one XP, the other 2K. I had not trouble. But I have one idea for you to look into. The installer package is 27,281,991 bytes. Is the file you downloaded exactly the same size? If not, are you behind some kind of firewall? Or required to use a proxy server? Is it possible that the proxy or firewall is altering the installer as it passes through? If, in fact, the file size is not identical, you might consider bringing this up with your system administrators. Here is (I think!) the relevant FAQ from the Inno website: http://www.jrsoftware.org/isfaq.php#corrupt It seems to be saying a similar thing as I suggested. (Inno is the software Matt and I use to make the installer package after building ifeffit, horae, and the docs, examples, and such.) Bruce, first of all, thanks for the quick and enlightening reply. As a matter of fact, the installer files that I had downloaded from both sourceforge and cars.uchicago.edu were smaller than 27,281,991 bytes, so this was the reason why I got that error message. Now, the reason why the files were downloaded smaller than the actual size seems a bit strange. Although my computer is behind the Australian National University firewall, I never had this kind of problem before, so I thought it shouldn't be the case now. The problem seems to be the fact that I have Mozilla Firefox as my default web browser, and was using it to download the files. For some weird reason, Firefox seems to be getting these files smaller than they should be. So, I've installed a download manager (getright) and tried again... and it worked perfectly. I got the .exe file from cars.uchicago.edu with the exact size, installed the whole package and am already using the newest version of Ifeffit-Artemis-Athena. Thanks for the help once again. I hope at least this post may be useful to someone who may experience a similar situation. Cheers, Leandro
Hello, I had the same problem but the solution was much simpler. There are two links on the page http://cars9.uchicago.edu/ifeffit/download.html The Sourceforge-link: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ifeffit/ifeffit-1.2.8.exe?download results in a file of only about 25MB and the second link: http://cars9.uchicago.edu/ifeffit/src/ifeffit-1.2.8.exe results in a valid file. Gerrit, Leandro, Bruce, everyone, Gerrit is right - the .exe file at sourceforge.net was too small. I think this must be my fault for uploading too anxiously last friday -- sorry for any trouble. I have now replaced the ifeffit-1.2.8.exe file at sourceforge.net, and the new one is now 27281991 bytes (the same size as the one at cars9.uchicago.edu). I won't be at a Windows machine to test this until tomorrow, but I'm sure this will work better. I do not know how quickly the sourceforge mirrors will update the file, so I've also altered the Ifeffit download page to temporarily not have a link to the sourceforge .exe. I'll change it back in a few days when I know that all the sourceforge versions are the righte size. Again, sorry for any trouble and glad to hear that you were able to work it out! --Matt
