Deglitching in Athena 0.9.14
Dear Bruce and Ifeffit users, I just installed the latest version of Demeter, 0.9.14, on my Windows 7 computer. I tried to deglitch a dataset in x(E). Upon clicking "choose a point" the window pops up telling me to double click in the gnuplot window. I can select a point but there doesn't appear to be any feedback in the UI about which point was selected until after clicking ok. Then after ok I get a large "E". It is difficult to tell sometimes exactly which point was selected as the E is quite large. I guess this is turning into more a "bug" report/feature request, but I felt the previous interface in Athena 0.8.054 gave much more feedback during the deglitching process of removing points. I was wondering if there was a setting that could change back to the old style or if this was a decision based on the limitation of gnuplot/perl. I hope this submission is alright for the mailing list. In the future I could post these "issues" on github. Thanks very much, Lyle

The fact that plucking is awkward in the new software has come up on this list before and I always ackanolwedge that it is the one step backwards in the new stuff. The task of double clicking in gnuplot and transfering the result to Athena is actually a bit tricky because that communication happens via the clipboard. This is the only advantage I can think of to using Ifeffit and PGPLOT rather than gnuplot. With PGPLOT, the communication of plucking a point from a plot happens directly between PGPLOT and Athena. Negotiating the communication via the clipboard has various pitfalls. The solution I originally came up with worked great on linux and hung the computer on Windows. Sigh.... As a compromise, I came up with the current scheme. It sucks, but at least it behaves consistently (albeit consistently awkwardly) on both platforms. I am going to spend some time this week looking into this again. Last night I came up with a new idea that I want to try out. I'll post an update if I make any progress. Regarding the big "E" (which is supposed to be a circle with a cross in it -- #305 from the S column at http://cars9.uchicago.edu/ifeffit/Demeter/GnuplotSymbols): I have seen this problem several times before, but it was always at a training course when I did not have the time to look into it. I suspect it has something to do with which fonts are installed on your computer or where they live on your computer. However, this does not happen on any of my Windows computers, which is why the problem remains unsolved. I am willing to look into this problem, but I will need your help to try out a few things. Lyle, if you are willing to volunteer a bit of time to help me troubleshoot this problem, please contact me off the mailing list and we'll proceed from there.
