Happy New Year everyone! I have just released Athena 0.8.047, Artemis 0.8.004 and Hephaestus 0.12. You can read all about them at http://cars9.uchicago.edu/iffwiki/HoraeVersion059 New source code tarballs are at SourceForge and at my website. A Windows updater package has been made available and should be offered to the Windows users the next time you fire up one of the codes. Debian users can check Carlo's repository in the next few days -- he is usually quite punctual in making debian packages. The horae_update script has been fixed (I think). Those that want to use it can grab its newest version at http://cars9.uchicago.edu/~ravel/software/packages/horae_update and use it to install the software. As always, let me know about any problems or suggestions. How do I force A&A to load the new updates? I've been using it today and it says that it checked for updates recently. mam Bruce Ravel wrote:

I rebuilt the mac installer (for 10.4) with the latest horae-059 and uploaded it to sourceforge. I believe I fixed all of the problems with the installation process now (but I could use a guinea pig to try it out to be sure). Happy new year Matt and Bruce ... and to all the other happy feff users out there. Hopefully I will get to have a beer or two with some of you at SLAC (XAFS 13). Paul p.s. the new file is at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ifeffit/ ifeffit-1.2.8-Mac10.4_pkg.dmg?download On Jan 3, 2006, at 06:00 AM, Bruce Ravel wrote:

Hi Paul and Bruce,
I rebuilt the mac installer (for 10.4) with the latest horae-059 and uploaded it to sourceforge. I believe I fixed all of the problems with the installation process now (but I could use a guinea pig to try it out to be sure).
I acted as the guinea pig (even though I really don't like that definition... :-)) and I appily report that the installer works. No bad surprises like the one before, and that is good news (even though, learning from experience, I had made a back up of the Ifeffit and Perl folders...) Running the horae_update script after I installed the program using the installer provided by Paul, I get the following message, which I interpret as an error: = Horae Updater (using LWP::UserAgent) version 0.11 = Timeout = 30 seconds = Attempting to fetch a release listing from = http://sourceforge.net/export/rss2_projfiles.php?group_id=80919 XMLin() requires either XML::SAX or XML::Parser at /Applications/Ifeffit/bin/horae_update line 193 Best, Stefano -- ____________________________________________ Stefano Ciurli Professor of Chemistry Laboratory of Bioinorganic Chemistry Department of Agro-Environmental Science and Technology University of Bologna Viale Giuseppe Fanin, 40 I-40127 Bologna Italy Phone: +39-051-209-6204 Fax: +39-051-209-6203 "Fatti non foste a viver come bruti, ma per seguir virtute e canoscenza" Dante Alighieri - Inferno - Canto XXVI "Ihr seid bestimmt, nicht Tieren gleich zu leben, Nein, Tugend zu erringen und Erkenntnis" "Ye were not form'd to live the life of brutes, But virtue to pursue and knowledge high"

Ahhh, crap! I thought I had included enough of the XML modules in the horae distribution so that horae_update would work. It seems I did not. Sorry. It seems that horae_update should still be considered broken. I have to say that I am losing patience with trying to maintain this particular piece of code. It isn't anything more clever than a wrapper which downloads, unpacks, and builds the tarball. In truth, it isn't all that hard for the user to just download, unpack, and build. It is, however, proving hard for me to stay on top of a moving target. --- Unless someone can give me a very compelling reason that horae_update --- is *necessary*, I am inclined to discontinue supporting it. Of course, this is a fine opportunity for someone who would like to contribute to the ifeffit community by offering to take over responsibility for horae_update.... Bruce,
I have to say that I am losing patience with trying to maintain this particular piece of code. It isn't anything more clever than a wrapper which downloads, unpacks, and builds the tarball. In truth, it isn't all that hard for the user to just download, unpack, and build. It is, however, proving hard for me to stay on top of a moving target.

personally, I think that if the instructions to download-unpack-build the tarball are clear enough (as they are now), the horae_update is simply a luxury that could be avoided, especially if it creates more trouble to you than necessary.
