There is no standard in the XAS community about how beamlines present data. The need to handle crazy files from crazy beamlines is precisely the reason that the file type plugin mechanism exists in Athena. The main purpose of that mechanism is to "clean up" weird data files for import into Athena. That said, if you have hundreds of data files in front of you -- quite reasonable for a qXAS experiment -- then Athena is probably not quite the right tool for the job.
