I have a message pretty similar to what Kleper sees (both problems he has located: "could not read bitmap...." and "can´t open \share\per1\Xray\space_groups.db:"). This is indeed sounds like non-ASCII names on my computer.
Would be nice to find a way to overcome the problem without logging as another user.
The "could not load bitmap" problem is entirely unfamliar to me. Nothing like that ever happens on my windows machine, so I am unsure what advice to offer. While I agree that a solution that did not penalize speakers on non-ascii languages is the best choice, it would be very helpful to Matt and I if you could do the test. Without a clearer hint about where to look, there is little chance that I'll be able to solve this problem. As for the "can´t open \share\per1\Xray\space_groups.db:" problem, Matt has already explained the solution. The desktop and start menu shortcuts that get installed by the installer actually point at the runner program. One of the things the runner does is to set an environment variable that my codes need to figure out where the Ifeffit package is installed on disk. If that environment variable is not set, that message is the first place that the codes run into trouble. In the C:\Program Files\Ifeffit\bin folder, there is a bat file called use_ifeffit.bat that shows you how to set the environment variables. Try running that bat file before trying to run the programs from the command prompt. If you installed the codes someplace other than "C:\Program Files\Ifeffit" you will need to edit the use_ifeffit.bat file accordingly. I am genuinely concerned that you are having these problems. It is our intention that the codes install and run easily on all the different platforms. Judging from the large number of people on this mailing list happily using the codes, it would seem that we are mostly successful. I am currently working on the windows installer in advance of this summer's APS XAFS School, so now is a good moment to try to solve your problems. If you are inclined to help me troubleshoot, I am inclined to attempt to solve the problem.
