On a related note, I’m not sure I fully understand how the data summation is different from the merge? Clearly data summation allows you more control (arbitrary weighting of groups etc.) and is intended for XANES analysis, but is it a fundamentally different procedure or just a different interface for the same thing?
It's not horribly different from merge with weight by importance. I suppose that it is more convenient in that it's all on one page. Weighting by importance requires a lot of clicking around to get the importance values set just so. Also, the merge divides the result by the sum of importance (or the sum of whatever weighting you use) whereas the data summer does not do that final normalization step. So, I think I'll go with "different interface for the same thing". I guess the summer is a bit more interactive-ish.
