So, I tried you suggestion and I get the same ValueError message. Just in case I made a mistak I tried to do the re-install again and this time I kept all of the output in case it would help you. You can see it below.

pymatgen with conda:

I think that ought to work but I'm not sure why the other version failed. But it might be that taking pymatgen (with several binaries) is better done from conda anyway.
I'm going to try that on a couple of Linuxes...
