Dear colleagues, There are only a FEW DAYS left for you to submit your AGU abstract to one of the most exciting AGU Fall meeting sessions<https://eur05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.agu.o…> (13-17 December 2021, New Orleans): Experimental and Analytical Advances in Physics and Chemistry Studies of Minerals at Extreme Conditions<https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm21/prelim.cgi/Session/122465> (MR007) Session ID#: 122465 Experimental and analytical advances are essential in anticipation of scientific progress. Studying the physical and chemical properties of rock-forming minerals at extreme pressure, stress and temperature conditions provides invaluable information for modeling the planetary interiors, as well as an insight on geological processes that still remain ongoing conundrums. Recent developments in static and dynamic state-of-the-art experimental methods elucidate fundamental properties (e.g. structure, melting, kinetics, elasticity, phase relations and others) of geo-materials and extend this research to previously inaccessible scales. Pioneer computational-theory in combination with high quality data and advanced analysis methods allow for the full assessment of countless plausible scenarios that describe micro- and macroscopic processes in various time-domains. This session welcomes contributions that highlight innovative experimental and analytical techniques that address a wide range of physical and chemical mineral properties, and enhance our understanding of the formation, structure and dynamics of the Earth's interior and other planetary bodies. Dear colleagues, We are announcing a workshop on: Advances in synchrotron-based research towards understanding the structure, evolution, and dynamics of Earth and planetary interiors Save the dates : August 31 - September 2, 2021. As recently announced, the NSF-EAR is soliciting proposals to develop, manage, operate, and support user access to U.S. synchrotron-based and supporting laboratory capabilities necessary to advance Earth sciences research and training (https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2021/nsf21592/nsf21592.pdf) The new single lead organization will manage currently supported synchrotron facilities (operated by GSECARS and COMPRES) and develop new capabilities to address priority science questions and related infrastructure recommendations such as those identified in the report: Earth in Time (https://doi.org/10.17226/25761) In the light of this solicitation, we are organizing a workshop (hybrid or virtual mode) to address future opportunities to advance geomaterials research at high pressures, temperatures, and strain rates. We encourage everyone who plans to utilize synchrotron-based and supporting sample analytical capabilities in their research to participate in the workshop. Graduate student and post-doctoral scholar participation is particularly encouraged. Topics to be addressed: (1) Current state-of-the-art synchrotron capabilities for studies of Earth and planetary materials at elevated conditions, from crust to the core and beyond. (2) Novel technological developments and capabilities that will boost Earth and planetary sciences research, especially in view of recent and planned upgrades to US synchrotron facilities. (3) New approaches to foster engagement and expansion of the user community, including to traditionally underrepresented constituencies. (4) User community needs for cyberinfrastructure and data services. The Geoscience Synchrotron User Steering Committee is forming an Education and Outreach Committee to guide the vision, proposal writing, and program implementation for education and outreach, as well as belonging, accessibility, justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (BAJEDI) initiatives within the nascent Geoscience Synchrotron User community. We are looking for individuals interested in joining the committee from the breadth of the Geoscience Synchrotron community including graduate students, post docs, early career scientists, and those whose career paths are more established.
