CARS FYI no. 3 (July 30, 2009)

Staff Updates

The Dean of Physical Sciences, Robert Fefferman, has reappointed Jim Viccaro as the Executive Director of the Center for Advanced Radiation Sources effective September 1, 2009, for another term of three years.

Keith Moffat was the subject of an excellent “Careers” profile in The Scientist (May 2009). The profile was a companion piece to an article tracing the new field of light-oxygen-voltage–based biological signaling; both Keith and his former student (and early BioCARS user) Sean Crosson are featured in the article.

Congratulations are in order to Mati Meron, Vukica Srajer, and Yanbin Wang, who have been promoted to the position of senior scientist within CARS.

The following are (relatively) recent staff changes:

  • Yongseong Choi, research beamline scientist, joined GSECARS
  • Nadege Hilaret, postdoctoral scholar, joined GSECARS (a much belated welcome)
  • Innokenty (Inno) Kantor, postdoctoral scholar, joined GSECARS (a much belated welcome)
  • Kyungil (KI) Kim, postdoctoral scholar, joined ChemMatCARS
  • Adam Stash has joined ChemMatCARS for 10 weeks as a visiting senior research associate, working with Yu-Sheng Chen
  • Xiaochun Yang, scientific associate, transferred from IMCA to ChemMatCARS
  • Tony Yu, postdoctoral scholar, joined GSECARS

GSECARS has three postdoctoral appointments open. Please contact Vitali Prakapenka and Peter Eng for details. [top]

Funding News

  • Both BioCARS and ChemMatCARS have received their five-year competitive renewal from NIH and NSF/DOE, respectively, for continuing operating funding.
  • GSECARS has received favorable indications from DOE, NSF, and NASA for the joint funding of an upgrade to a dual canted undulator design and is awaiting formal notice of the award. The APS has agreed to provide the accelerator-associated components (undulator and front-end components) for the proposed upgrade.
  • Przemek Dera co-chaired the 41st Erice International School of Crystallography, held in Erice, Italy, June 4-14, 2009, which focused on high-pressure crystallography. He and Steve Sutton successfully requested funding from NSF to support eight U.S. students’ travel to the meeting. [top]

CARS Is Tour Hotspot

CARS is well known within Argonne as “the” destination for student tours. From July 2007 to April 2009, we hosted 17 tours and a total of 315 students, teachers, and other visitors. A big thanks to our most excellent tour guides! [top]

Workshop Scheduled for September

Vitali Prakapenka (GSECARS) will host a workshop on Brillouin spectroscopy on September 22-25, 2009. About 50 participants are expected. The meeting is generously sponsored by Consortium for Materials Properties Research in Earth Sciences (COMPRES). [top]
