The CARS staff members and users of CARS facilities at the APS are individually responsible for both their own safety and that of their colleagues affected by their actions.

Steady Tone & Special Notification : Follow loud speaker directions
Beamline Safety
APS Shielding Configuration Policy :
Do not remove or modify any orange or yellow tagged lead or components for any reason. Examples of tagged components are : collimators, bremstrahlung shields, survey ports, leaded beampipes and backstops. Hutch labyrinths are also yellow tagged. Only GSECARS staff members may open a side or roof labyrinth.
Electrical Safety :
Hutch circuit breakers are located inside each hutch. Hutch disconnects are located outside each hutch. There is a circuit breaker and disconnect for clean power (orange plug-in sockets) and dirty power (black plug-in sockets). Laser power supply disconnects are in ID-D, ID-C and BM-D and in the Laser Lab.
Radioactive Check Sources :
The check sources are located in the GSECARS Chemistry Lab in a locked cabinet on the wall. Users must sign out and then back in each source in the log book which is also located in the cabinet.
Radiation Survey Meters :
Two survey meters are located in the GSECARS LOM for use at any time by users.
Water Manifolds :
Each hutch has several dedicated water manifolds. De-ionized water flows through these manifolds, in a closed loop system, from a GSECARS NesLab unit located on the APS Mezzanine. Water flow problems will trip the EPS and close the FE shutter. A power black-out or burp will trip off the NesLab unit and it needs to be manually reset. Contact a GSECARS staff member if the EPS indicates that there is a water problem.
Compressed Gases :
He flow is required on downstream Be windows in ID-C and BM-D. The EPS will trip if no pressure is sensed and the FE shutter will close. Call a GSECARS staff member of the EPS shows a He fault.
Gas Farm :
If no flow is shown on the gas manifold panels in the hutch, check the status of the gas cylinders located on the Sector 13/Sector 14 aisleway or contact a GSECARS staff member. A gas pressure warning can be viewed on the EPS MEDM screen under Equipment Protection System - Utilities - He gas farm pressure (left) and He gas farm pressure (right) . The Gas Pressure will show a fault if it is < 200 psi. Replace the required He gas cylinders when a low pressure is indicated.
Gas Storage Cage :
The gas storage cage is located outside, next to Truck Lock. Full cylinders for use by users in Sector 13 can be found in the Sector 13 and 15 cages. All cylinders must be moved with a gas cart and must be secured when in use. Return empty cylinders to the Empty Cylinder cage.
LN2 :
The LN2 Fill Station is in the 434 Truck Lock. Follow instructions on the wall. GSECARS has a large dewar on wheels as well as a small 4 liter dewar for use by Sector 13 users. If you have problems with the Fill Station, contact the APS Floor Coordinator (beeper 4-0101).
Hutch Cranes :
Contact GSECARS technical support if you need to use a hutch crane. Untrained users are not allowed to use the hutch cranes.
Ladders :
In using a ladder, do not go above the recommended step or above 6 feet.
Roof Access :
Sector 13 has a yellow roof access ladder on ID-A. Please notify a GSECARS staff member if you need to access the roof. Users are not allowed to access the roof of ID-D.
General Housekeeping :
Keep the egress aisles clear. No food or drinks are allowed in the hutches or labs and only drinks are allowed on the APS Experimental Floor.
Lab Safety
Laser Lab
Authorized laser users must read the applicable Safety Protocols. Keep roll-up lab doors closed except when in-use.
Chemistry Lab
Users may use hood, lab tables or counter tops in the Chemistry Lab. MSDS sheets for all chemicals used must be available.
Be aware of Hazardous Waste Procedures. Use sharps container, gloves and eye wear when required.
Keep roll-up lab doors closed except when in-use.
PSS
Any problems with hutch interlock system, call GSECARS staff member or APS Floor Coordinator (beeper 4-0101).
Visitor Safety
Visitors who have not had APS User Orientation must be escorted whenever they are in hazardous areas such as chemical laboratories or radiologically controlled areas.
Transporting Hazardous Materials
Under no circumstances may you transport a nonexempt hazardous material to the APS in your own car. For more specific informtaion see Hazardous Materials and Chemicals at ANL. To have a hazardous material shipped to GSECARS:
