The Department of Geophysical Sciences is hosting a Symposium and Dinner to honor the memory of Joseph V. Smith.  The date of the event is October 6, 2007, with the symposium held in Hinds HGS 101 on the University of Chicago Campus.  Immediately following the symposium there will be a reception at the Department of Geophysical Sciences.  The Dinner will be held in Swift Hall.  See map below for locations.

Lodging

Attendees are asked to make their own lodging arrangements.  Please be aware that there is a problem due to the Chicago Marathon (45,000 runners!), Oct. 7, and all downtown hotels are fully booked for Oct. 6 or asking upwards of $400 per night for few remaining rooms. Alternative locations include the following:

Argonne Guest House:  The Argonne Guest House is located in the Argonne National Laboratory campus which is roughly 30 miles (~40 mins) from the University of Chicago campus (see map above).  The Guest House has 157 rooms, including 2-bedroom premiere suites with parlors, and 4-bedroom suites with parlors.       Those wishing to stay at the Guest House should contact them directly (800-632-8990; argonne-guest-house@anl.gov) to make a reservation using the event name “J. V. Smith Event”.  Rates are as low as $70/night (standard room) +6%.  September 21 is the release date for this block.   The Guest House has a restaurant and its hours can be found on this web site.  Note that only breakfast is available on weekends.

      Argonne National Laboratory is a secure DOE facility and gate passes are required to enter the facility.  Non-US citizens need to obtain clearance by registering as soon as possible at
