GeoSync By-Laws


Definition: GeoSync Society is an organization of Earth scientists who use synchrotron radiation or have an interest in the application of synchrotron radiation to the Earth sciences. GeoSync is affiliated with the Mineral Physics Committee of the American Geophysical Union.

Goals: The main goals of GeoSync are to: (1) facilitate the use of synchrotron radiation by earth scientists, (2) aid in the planning and development of synchrotron beamlines, (3) inform earth scientists about activities and developments in the field of synchrotron radiation applications to earth science research and (4) elect representatives to committees and governing bodies of other synchrotron-related organizations.

Membership: Membership is open to anyone who uses synchrotron radiation for earth sciences or has an interest in applications of synchrotron radiation to the earth sciences. Membership is defined as those individuals who inform the Secretary of their desire to become a member.

Meetings: The main meetings of GeoSync Society occur twice yearly at the Fall and Spring meetings of the AGU. Other meetings are held at GSA and at user meetings of the various synchrotron radiation facilities.


Officers:

Chairpersons: GeoSync is governed by a Chairperson and a Chairperson-elect. They shall have expertise in different disciplines of the earth sciences and shall have the main responsibility of leading the earth science community in achieving the goals of GeoSync. The Chairperson presides over GeoSync meetings and conducts elections with the assistance of the Secretary.

Secretary: The Secretary has the responsibility of maintaining the membership list, notifying members of meetings, distributing agenda and minutes, coordinating the production and distribution of regular newsletters, and archiving all GeoSync documents.

Terms of Office

Chairperson: The Chairperson-elect shall take office at the Fall meeting of the AGU in even years, shall serve one year in that capacity and then assume the office of Chairperson for a two year term.

Secretary: The Secretary shall take office at the Fall meeting of AGU in odd years and shall serve a two year term.

Elections: Elections for all officers shall be by majority vote of the members.

Amendments: Amendments of the by-laws shall require a two-thirds approval by voting members.
